ATL Journal-Constitution: Fan killed in fall at Turner Field (RR)

A Braves fan has died after falling four floors from the stands at Turner Field during Wednesday night’s Braves-Mets game, authorities said.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Justin Hayes, 25, of Cumming. Hayes fell an estimated four levels inside the stadium to field level, striking concrete and metal railing, according to Atlanta Police spokesman Ron Campbell.

Alcohol may have been involved, Campbell said.

Hayes was reported to have been sliding on a handrail in the bottom of the 8th inning when he slipped off.

Once is a fluke, twice is a pattern, or so it will go in the media/MLB offices.

I'm betting we see a whole slew of new safety features to prevent idiots from killing themselves. Although, I've been a little worried about my kids sometimes at the park. While they're not idiots (or so I'm told), they're children and thus have poor judgment.

I'm not sure the area where he fell, but you have to be pretty dumb to fall that far at turner field.

You know, as dumb as Wrigley Field drunks are, I'm not aware of one ever having killed him/herself this way.

I remember a guy at Wrigley falling from a ramp to his death some years-but since he didn't land on anyone and he was a Mets fan it was no big deal.

Funny, considering a METS FAN fell to his death in the same fashion at Shea just a month ago (April 16, 2008 to be precise). Not to mention the Wrigley Field incident, which involved yet ANOTHER MET FAN.

What does that say about the collective IQ of the Mets fanbase in comparison, Sherlock?

Or he slipped while on the stairs, was jostled from behind while descending, etc. There are a million ways to fall off of a crowded staircase or escalator without engaging in stupid behavior. It may well have been the victims' fault in every one of these fan injuries or deaths over the years, but it amuses me that regulars on this forum immediately accept something as fact without knowing anything about the situation and with the knowledge that the owners have a huge stake in spinning this as the fans' fault.

The investigation is “pointing toward drinking. Alcohol was a factor,” Atlanta police spokesman Ronald Campbell said Thursday.

Hayes’ parents said Justin Hayes had “a couple of beers.”

“According to his friends, he had a couple of beers like most people at a game,” said John and Cindy Hayes in a statement released Thursday. “They were leaving and having fun, and he did what he does at home—tried to slide down the railing. Unfortunately, he just slipped over.”
