ATL Journal-Constitution blog: Legendary Braves broadcaster [Ernie] Johnson dies

A day meant to celebrate Bobby Cox’s induction into the Braves Hall of Fame, turned bittersweet on Friday evening when word came that legendary Braves broadcaster and fellow Braves Hall of Famer Ernie Johnson Sr. died. He was 87.

His son Ernie Johnson Jr, also a sports broadcaster for Turner Sports, confirmed the news to Braves broadcasters Joe Simpson and Chip Caray, who began spreading the word during Friday’s broadcast of the Braves-Cubs games.

The gentle-voiced and kind-hearted Johnson spent 35 years broadcasting Braves games, beginning in 1962 when he was hired as the color commentator for the Milwaukee Braves. He was inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame in 2001.

The Brewers announcers mentioned it as well, as he spent most of his playing days in Milwaukee.

I have a strange affinity for Ernie Johnson, because he gave up Rocky's last homer in his 4-homer game

Grew up listening to Ernie on TBS, and he's part of the reason I'm a braves fan.

Underrated announcer and nice guy to boot. RIP.

Rest in peace, Ernie - you'll be missed.

He helped guide me through the disappointment of what seemed like 50 years of shitty Braves teams in the mid and late 80s. As said before, a very underrated announcer and great man. Read Pete Van Wieren's book to find out all you'll ever need to know about Ernie.

Hope your journey's a blessed one, Ernie.

I learned to love baseball listening to Ernie. He may not have been as widely known, but he was our Jack Buck, our Vin Scully...

And the nicest guy in the world!
If you never knew your grandad, he is exactly the man you'd want him to be.

Rest in peace, Ernie.
