Avisail Garcia needs shoulder surgery, will miss rest of season

I haven’t seen so many injuries in a sport since Harvey Keitel got his in Taxi Driver.

White Sox right fielder Avisail Garcia has a torn labrum in his left shoulder after injuring it during Wednesday’s game in Colorado. He’ll need surgery to repair it, which will end his 2014 season. The White Sox made the announcement official Thursday afternoon.

Garcia, 22, was attempting a diving catch in the sixth inning Thursday, after which he was in obvious pain laying on the field. He laid there for a few minutes before departing the game.

Since being acquired in the trade that sent Jose Iglesias to the Tigers and Jake Peavy to the Red Sox last July, Garcia has hit .298/.332/.450 (110 OPS+) with four doubles, two triples, seven homers and 25 RBI in 202 plate appearances.

To reiterate the point I made in the Matt Moore thread: Sheesh.

The orioles should put Kevin Gausman in a plastic bubble.

Well, that sucks. He's fun to watch.

A 23 year old shortstop, a 22 year old right fielder and a 32 year old pitcher are involved in the same trade. Bet you could've gotten pretty good odds that on April 11 the following season the only one still healthy would be the pitcher.

Umm...walk into a bar. The shortstop says to the right-fielder "are you happy?" The pitcher says "he might be happy but I'm peaved!" (get it? get it?) Ah #### it.

This is a very small positive, but...

The Sox were doing everything in their power to prevent Dayan Viciedo from getting a full season's worth of at-bats this year (re-signing Konerko to be Dunn's platoon partner; not trading De Aza). I'm still not sold on Viciedo being a worthwhile ML player but I'm willing to give him 500 more AB's to prove me wrong.

But yeah, a huge bummer in the midst of a decent start to the season.

It might save time to wait until the end of the day and just list the players who didn't suffer a season-ending injury that day.

A 23 year old shortstop, a 22 year old right fielder and a 32 year old pitcher walk into a bar. The shortstop orders a Gin Mint, and the bartender comes back and gives him shin splints. The right fielder orders a Tornado Rum, and the bartender comes back and gives him a torn labrum. The pitcher says please award me a Rye - young.

Also, the bartender was Curtis Pride.

The pitcher says, "Avisail?" The shortstop says, "No, but I've got an outboard motor."

If there is a context for "bone involvement" being a welcome phrase, this is not it.

This stinks. I can't share the optimism about Tank getting ABs against right handers.

A rabbi walks into a bar with a frog perched on his shoulder. Bartender says, "Hey, where'd you get that?" Frog says, "Brooklyn! They have tons of them!" The frog is now out with reconstructive flipper surgery; the rabbi won't be permitted to start soft tossing until 5775.

Except these days, it's not an actual rabbi, it's just a hipster dressing like a rabbi ironically.

Yeah, how the hell is Peavy not injured yet? It's nearly the third week of the season, for chrissake.

Well, he was injured during spring training; he cut himself in the hand while supposedly opening up a package of fishing rods.
