Awful Announcing: John Mayer Is My New Favorite Announcer (Video)

Bob Gamere, you’re fired. And that happened.

I was going to post this saying that this Anonymous guy is my new favorite announcer, but after a little sleuth work (I read the YouTube comments) I found out that it’s musician John Mayer. He is in Japan for some reason, and this is the best call of an at-bat I’ve heard in quite awhile…..

“And that happened” is now my new favorite catchphrase. I will use it until it’s no longer funny.

And the funny thing is, I couldn't differentiate this from a non-Jon Miller ESPN telecast.

His delivery was fantastic. If you just had it on in the background and weren't paying attention to what was being said, you'd never realize it was just some guy riffing on his handicam.

"Boom goes the dynamite. And that happened."

Anyone know what Pedroia's career numbers look like on a one-blue, one-yellow count?

It was actually good, aside from the content. Funny AG, I thought he had a little Miller in him, like when his voice shot up when "that happened."

And that happened

Who uses that line first this season...Boog Sciambi, Darren Sutton or Len Kasper?

I vote Boog.
But then, Joe Simpson might die of apoplexy.

"So, that happened" is probably the funniest line in State and Main. Small wonder - it was uttered by the incomparable Alec Baldwin.

And it goes over the white line...I'm not sure what that means.

Yes, the delivery was outstanding, but for his words. Maybe he thought he was broadcasting to the Japanese. Or was he watching from the CF bleachers without a monitor? Perhaps he doesn't know the rules of baseball...

He's a musician, he talks in colors. Better than talking in maths.

On the original YouTube post, Mayer includes the following tags:

Heh.

My favorite thing is that he's so into it while having literally no idea what's going on AT ALL.

Apparently, Mayer does stand-up as a hobby. I'm inclined to believe that he was just fooling around. I know quite a bit about baseball, but I think if I had a video camera and tried to do a serious play-by-play I would suck. It's easier to just say, "And that happened."

Once on the red carpet for some event, Mayer was asked a personal question by a reporter, and he responded in Japanese. Sure, it was halting, accented Japanese, but it was awesome. I hate "Your Body is a Wonderland", but John Mayer is cool.

Trust me, this guy's one of the shrewdest celebrities around. He's in on this joke.

I love the fact that John Mayer is such a subversive character in pop culture. He was outside Farm Aid one year, dressed like a giant rooster and messing with me and my friends. He had a special on VH1 a few years back where he brought in a bunch of teenage girls that liked his music and then acted as though he was using them for market research. He then told them that, "Most of the songs you hear on the radio-including mine-are written by a man named(speaking very slowly)Richard Marx." I just about fell off my chair I laughed so hard.

John Mayer is cool.

He was on Chappelle's Show.

John Mayer had his own show for like 6 weeks on Vh1 or something. He went outside one of his concerts in a bear costume interviewing fans. During the interviews with the people he did nothing but rip on his music and the fans for liking him.

My favorite thing is that posters here are so quick to bash broadcasters that they have literally no idea what's going on AT ALL.
