B-ref Blog: Batting Order Position Outcomes

Now that pitchers & catchers have reported, so has Sean Forman - getting ready to roll out his site’s updates for 2008.  He also has a new feature under wraps called batting count summary.

Development on Baseball-Reference.com has been slow lately due to a lot of business stuff going on and a lot of work on our Football site

Is there a college basketball equivalent of BBRef?

Cool addition Sean, many thanks.

Interesting that the 2007 Red Sox were 55-27 with Lugo batting leadoff, and just 14-15 with Pedroia at leadoff....

I really like the addition. Small suggestion: refer to the month by name not number. With batting order and month both on the same scale, there's too much opportunity for confusion.

also, you left out runs scored in all the charts

(unless I'm blind & can't see it)

The "All Teams" function doesn't seem to work. There is no data at all.

Basketball-reference.com has college basketball stats for past years. Not current seasons just yet.

All Teams was just a residue of some re-used code. I've taken it off there.

This is set up as reading off my play-by-play table, so it can be very hard to determine runs scored for a lineup position when just looking at a play-by-play table. I hope to get that updated in the future, but you'll notice that SB and CS aren't in there either for the same reason.

So there is no way to find out league-wide averages at the leadoff position, #2, #3, etc?

yeah--you have to go to the league splits page
   11. Sean Forman Posted: February 20, 2008 at 07:37 PM (#2695695)
Also, if you are a subscriber there you can click on the split name (notice that it is red) and then you can sort the split by any stat listed.

Here are the 2007 MLB splits.

so, e.g., did you know that the Bosox had the 4th worst OPB from their leadoff position in the AL last year?

on the other hand, they were #1 at BO positions 2 and 3, #3 at cleanup, and #2 at BO 5

so they got a shitload of guys on base, just not from leadoff
