BA: Minor League Jobs Marry Love Of Baseball And Little Pay

One of two related BA articles I’m linking to today, this one discusses non-playing jobs in the minors (managers, coaches, media reps, clubbies, etc…). Highly recommended.

Who loves little pay? Other than management, of course.

Interning for a AA team was a great experience. It wasn't paid, but they gave me keys to the entire place.

I don't know about how great these jobs are, even if you love baseball.

100 hours a week and crappy pay absolutely sucks. Hell, I've done 70 hours a week with very good pay, and that sucked.

I don't see why even a hard-core fan isn't better off getting a solid 9-to-5 job with decent pay and benefits, and dedicating 40 hours of leisure time to baseball. Either as a pure fan, or a serious analyst.

Maybe I'm just a pure mercenary, but if I my choices were 1) work 100 hours a week as asst. GM of the NY Yankees for $50G or 2) work 40 hours a week organizing thumbtacks for an insane miser for $200G, I'd be learning a lot about thumbtacks.

I'm with Snaps. These jobs are seemingly meant to attract people without prospects. And don't give me that "prove your love of the game" bullwonky; I, if I were a GM, would rather hire someone who has proven their love of practicality and a responsible future.

And 70 with good pay does blow. For crap pay? Goodnight.

A neighbor kid did an unpaid internship with the Frontier League Windy City Cheetahs two years ago. Last year he worked for the Tigers. I have no idea what his pay and working conditions are, but he seems happy with the job.

Internships are a different bag. Most people work for free at some point in high school or college. Good for him.

Yeah, let me see, I need an assistant GM for my billion dollar MLB team. I could hire the guy with a 2.5 GPA in Phys Ed that has spent 12 years working in the minors for $25K, or I could hire a guy from Google who has an MBA, had a 3.8 GPA at a top college, and also built a projection system in his spare time.

Hmmmm, what should I do?

I'd sure as hell be calling Szym or ARom or SG for that job before some minor league lifer. Would I really care if I had to throw them an extra $50G or $100G in the context of an MLB payroll?

Sure. This is the stuff you do when you're 18-22 instead of making $8 an hour working for the town parks department. As a career, not so much.
