Backed by bats, sharp Sheets wins Atlanta debut

“He’s a gamer,” said Jones. “He knows in a 0-0 game against [Mets ace Johan] Santana that could possibly be one of the biggest outs in the game. What impressed me was that was the only really stressful inning he had. He really didn’t get into trouble after that.”

Sheeets didn’t allow a baserunner after that, retiring the final 10 Mets he faced.

Pretty good velocity too, it seems. Hit 93, averaged around 91 on his fastball.

Have to grant that it was an impressive outing for Sheets. Good for him if he can revive his career. Always nice to see a pitcher long since left for dead make a comeback.

A magical reappearance of something akin to pre-2008 Ben Sheets would go a long way towards scabbing over the wound left by the wound in Brandon Beachy's elbow.
