Baer: Grant Balfour still has many things to say about the botched deal with the Orioles

Grant Balfour isn’t going to let this issue go silently into the night. After the Orioles backed out of a two-year, $15 million contract with Balfour, the right-hander said he is considering filing a grievance. He continued to defend himself, saying that he has multiple doctors on his side vouching for his health. He also has a consistent track record of health and consistency over the last six seasons.

There’s still more. …

I doubt it will happen, someone else will give him a deal like this, but I would love to see him end up back with the Rays. He was one of my favorite players with them, a highly entertaining guy and he had a couple really great seasons for them.

What exactly does Balfour think happened here? I see no reason to doubt the original version of the story -- the A's doctors were fine with what they saw on the MRI, the O's doctors weren't, the contract was conditional on the physical, end of story. What would the Orioles possibly have to gain by making this deal -- a deal that was generally praised -- and then reneging on it three days later?

OK, but I can't blame Balfour for being frustrated. According to Susan Slusser, Balfour had thought he could get a three-year deal in free agency, reluctantly settled for two, and now he's got nothing.

Thank God! Now I can keep kinda half-assed rooting for the O's as my AL team. I'm sure Balfour will throw a fastball at the O's MRI technician's face and cuss him out in retaliation because that's how he rolls, the jackass.

Was Balfour involved in some hit batter/near miss of the head incident that I'm unaware of? Google doesn't turn anything up about it and without that this comment makes no sense. Balfour yells and swears a lot on the mound of course but it's not aimed at the opposing team.

The Rage is always welcome in Oakland. If he's at all reasonably priced, it just makes the Johnson deal look all the worse.

This is all just how Asbestos Pete rolls.
He pulled this same stunt around 15 years ago with Aaron Sele.

Probably a reference to his run-in with noted hothead Victor Martinez. Given their respective track records, I'd say there is a 107% chance that Balfour was the primary dick in the situation.

If he truly feels wronged by Cuban Pete, there can be no better way to for him to get revenge than by signing with the Nationals.

For Christ's sake, Andy, keep it in the OTP thread. Don't go around and make comments about posters in other threads based off comments in that thread.

Robothal:
Rays team physician Koco Eaton, who has a lengthy history with Balfour, doesn’t know why.

Eaton examined Balfour in Tampa on Friday and also performed a contrast MRI on the pitcher’s right shoulder — the area that troubled the Orioles, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Asked if he was surprised that the Orioles declined to complete their deal with Balfour, Eaton said “Yes,” adding that approving the contract was “kind of a no-brainer.”

The Orioles, under owner Peter Angelos, have been sticklers for “clean” medical reports, previously quashing deals with pitchers Xavier Hernandez and Aaron Sele and outfielder Jeromy Burnitz due to medical or contract-related medical concerns.

But Eaton told FOX Sports that he saw no red flags with Balfour’s arm, and Reds team physician Timothy Kremcheck — who performed elbow and shoulder surgeries on Balfour in 2005 — concurred.

“The MRI that I did on him today looked exactly the same as the MRI I did three years ago,” said Eaton, who cared for Balfour with the Rays from 2007 to ’10 and performed his physical when the pitcher signed a two-year, $8.1 million free-agent contract with the Athletics in Jan. 2011.

“It did not look normal compared to a person who does not play baseball for a living. But for someone who plays baseball for a living, it looked normal. There are abnormalities on the MRI as there are on every single baseball player’s. But three years ago, there was no issue, and he had pretty good performance when he was with Oakland.”

According to a source, the Orioles did not compare Balfour's present MRI to the one he had three years ago, as is customary.

Roch Kubato tweeted that the O's had an issue with Eaton:

Interesting to see Dr. Koko Eaton chime in on Balfour. Pissed off Buck royally with on-field diagnosis of Machado knee, saying torn ACL.

Dude pulled R.A. Dickey and the art of the knuckleball out of the Missouri river. Let's slow our roll.

1. Really surprising to hear medical folk weigh in on this publicly. They have nothing to gain by doing so.

2. Did the Orioles just discover that he was a human being that throws overhand and determine that that's a bad investment? Because that's half-smart.
