Balk plates tiebreaking run, lifts Diamondbacks over Dodgers

PHOENIX (AP) — A balk by Dodgers reliever Yimi Garcia sent home the tiebreaking run in the bottom of the eighth inning and helped the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-4 win over Los Angeles on Friday night.

With one out, Garcia (1-4) stepped off the rubber, turned abruptly to check Arizona’s Adam Jones at first base and didn’t throw over. The move was called a balk and allowed Tim Locastro to trot home from third base.

Archie Bradley (4-5) earned the win with 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Josh Rojas’ first big league home run tied the game at 4-all. Eduardo Escobar also homered for Arizona.

The game ended with a little drama as Escobar nearly booted a hard grounder to third by Justin Turner but recovered and threw out Turner at first base, stranding two runners.

As a side-note, this victory ended a record-setting streak by the Diamondbacks where they were within two games of .500 for over two months.

If he stepped off the rubber, that's not a balk.

You're right, but the report was wrong. He didn't step off.

Title needs the word "accidentally" in it.

Depends which way he stepped off. If he stepped back you’re right, if he stepped forward then he has to throw to first.

This was a single-move pivot, taking his right foot to the side. Roberts didn't even try to argue.

Just watched it, what the #### was he doing? That’s just a brain fart right there. That’s one of those moments you just really hope a sinkhole opens under the pitchers mound and swallows you up.
