Ballhype: Jaffe: The 2007 Von Hayes All-Stars

Yes…from Von Hayes to Von LMO is quite a drop off.

So whadaya say we look at this year’s Von Hayes All-Stars. The players who were really good once, but this year suddenly just . . . suck. If these guys would’ve made a team as solid as the 2006 White Sox. This year they’d be a team as pathetic as the 2007 White Sox. Here’s the line-up:

Right Field: Jermaine Dye. Can he really be the first White Sox to make the squad? Well, Juan Uribe, AJ Pierzynski, Tad Iguchi, and Joe Crede all have fallen off. But Uribe’s a little too young for this, AJ’s decline isn’t as drastic as others, Iguchi can only pull of the honorable mention, and Crede can use injuries as an excuse. That only leaves the 33-year-old RFr. Last year he was an MVP candidate. This year he’s possible trade bait—but how much demand is there really for a corner outfielder hitting .229 with a moderate number of walks, even if he does have power?

Actually, I do remember Von Hayes. He was the guy who got Wally Pipp'd for Tim Salmon.

I remember him as the guy the Phillies traded five players for (including a young [strange though it now sounds] Julio Franco and Manny Trillo, who was regarded as a star second baseman at the time).

Random note for anyone curious - about a half-dozen or so authors associated with The Hardball Times have expressed interest in occassionally writing pieces for ballhype. (From memory: Brattain, Geoff Young, Ben Jacobs, Gassko, um, some others). This is not to be done in opposition to THT. For my own part it's just something on the side if I have any extra ideas in the course of a week. My point is: if you like THT, you might want to make a note/bookmark to ballhype and see how it goes.

Of course I remember Von Hayes even as a West Coaster. First heard of him in some prognosticator's guess of who he thought would be the "players of the decade" at the end of the decade and said "Von Hayes, 3B, Cleveland" which took some guts considering Hayes' age and general lack of quality in Cleveland at the time.
Berman would call him "Purple" on telecasts and I wished he would go all the way Hendrix and pick a blooper reel shot singing "Purple Hayes, trade one for five...'scuse me while I miss a fly"

Jermaine Dye's been battling injury most of the season. He probably hasn't really been healthy all year. Probably the only reason he's been in the lineup is that they're trying to trade him.

There's nothing surprising about Dye. When he's healthy, he's great. When he's not, he struggles. He just has trouble staying healthy.

Sure enough--Hayes is 8 days younger than Franco. And last played in the majors in 1992.

Regarded and actually was; Trillo had been a very fine all-round player in '80 and '81 for the Phillies. They dealt him at that perfect moment when his reputation had displaced his abilities.

Julio Franco, not so much.

Hayes's career did fall off the table in 1991, but he too was injured that year (wrist broken by a pitch in June). He never played well after that. He wasn't playing well before that in '91, but the broken wrist sure didn't help ...

It just seems like so much speculation to me. I've heard Dye-for-Murton or Dye-for-Cedeno, either one of which would be an absolute steal for the Sox, but it just sounds like pissing in the wind.

I don't think Dye is going anywhere. Williams isn't going to deal him for peanuts, and nobody appears willing to give up anything of substantive value for him.

Probably because the Mets weren't expecting any kind of real production from him, and also because he's already had his collapse, way back in 2003 as a 30-year-old.

Third Base: Morgan Ensberg. Really, it's a toss between him and Scott Rolen. Ensberg wasn't as good for as long as Rolen, but Rolen's '05 was worse than his current campaign.

Not sure I agree with that. Rolen had two shoulder surgeries in '05, the first of which he "recovered" from after one month (without a rehab assignment), finishing out his year with a .557 OPS in his last 100 plate appearances. Before the first surgery, he had an .824 OPS on the year.

This year, however, Rolen has been healthy - and abysmal - from bell to bell, for more plate appearances than his injury-shortened 2005 season. Save for a fleeting moment in Wrigley, there haven't been any flashes of greatness from a guy that some thought would actually have something of a return to form this year.

I hope that's what it is. Otherwise, please shoot me now. Murton might be a better hitter than Dye right now, and he's definitely cheaper. And Cedeno's young enough and his 07 numbers good (nay--awesome) enough to suggest that he has real upside.

Since the All Star break, Dye's at .312/.389/.667 with 11/6 K/BB ratio in 56 PAs, along with 4 HRs and 5 doubles. Whoever gets Dye is going to get a Dye that's hitting the crap out of the ball.

I always think of Von Hayes and how he's been retired forever while Franco still plays.

I watched Franco play AA ball on ESPN during the '81 strike.

When the Phillies acquired Hayes, they compared him to Ted Williams -- lefthanded, skinny, from California...
