Ballplayers and reporters: can’t we just all get along?

Adam Everett, a young player with very little time in the big leagues, happened to walk over to this locker. And the media pounced. Bagwell soon walked into the locker room and saw Everett, cameras and lights in his face, attempting to speak on a subject he was not particularly equipped to handle.

When the media had cleared, Bagwell went over to Everett and said, “I promise you that will never happen again.” And it didn’t. There was never a time, at any point, where the veteran players left it up to the kids to pontificate after an important game that was drawing a lot of attention, locally or nationally.

hello boyz

cmon this is a story by a grrrrl reporter - hows about some luuuuvvvvv???!!!

should i mention that she's redheaded and my husband is not dumb enough to say she's HOTTTTTTT?

anyhow, she got the story just a leeeetle wrong about bagwell - i actually remember the adam everett incident which was in 04 - and adam was trying to answer carefully and bagwell came over near the end and interrupted and took over

bagwell and biggio were really REALLY good at talking and saying nothing except bull durham stuff

i think beat reporters - which alyson was for years - are real different from the national media who are not looking for answers but victims/balme/goats/heroes blahblahblah. one of the reasons i think that beat reporterrs didn't never talk/check out obvious steroid use or even admit they heard talk about it

Yet another aspect of Astros' history that will help to make them a fine American League franchise.

I have absolutely no comment on that statement, but my spokesman will be glad to get back to you if you'll just mail your questions to him at the address herein provided.

Just a joke.

If they moved the Reds to the AL (probably wouldn't happen, too much tradition)I don't think it would bug me much. Sometimes change is good. If I were a Houston fan, I would be more worried about Jim Crane than the league switch (which may not happen).

If it does, the Reds (and the Padres) need more fans.

bbc: Could you explain the reasons for your opinions? I have little use for game interviews or for that matter game stories, but with the availability of statistical information, the advantage credentialed media have over the guy in his mother's basement is access to the players. This article was recommended to me by another professional female sports writer. Do you think their concerns should not really be our concerns? Do find the dance between the players and the media described in TFA meaningless minutiae?

Is the writer's account of Everett and Bagwell, a serious revision of the events as commonly understood, or merely a different slant from what you or someone else witnessed? In the first case, she is seriously delusional, in the second case, she is just biased.

it doesn't matter what jim crane does if the astros are moved to the DH league. he has made it more than clear what he intends to do. if the stros stay in the NL, then we can all pray that crane drops dead, then at least there is hope that we will get sold to someone who actually wants to win, not lose. if the team goes to the AL, who gives a damm what crane does/doesn't do? not me and not most existing astros fans because i won't follow the team any more. as far as i'm concerned, DH ball is no more baseball than softball

jose

actually, she WAS a really good reporter

osuna,

either you misunderstood me or i wasn't clear. i think that at least in houston, the beat reporters did a very good job - they also work their asses off. a lot of what they report is interesting and helpful to understanding what a ballplayer is doing/what happened in game. bagwell and biggio are/were really good at talking a lot and saying bull durham - take it one day at a time - kind of stuff. and they DID do most of the post game talking, too and they DID deflect reporters from young guys. the beat reporters and justice did do a lot of non-game interviews that were worth reading. jose ortiz used to interview the latin guys and got some good stuff

alyson, who was a damm good beat reporter until she got hired by the astros to take a lot of pics of players instead of reporting, is either misremembering a justice column or justice got it slightly wrong because i was actually listening to that everett questioning when it happened - justice is not the one who was doing the questioning - and bagwell did not wait until it was over to save everett.
alyson is not delusional. not by a long shot. i feel for her because for the past5 year or so, she is no longer allowed to say anything not authorized by The Astros Ballclub bcause she is paid by them so there is a lot of blowing smoke up ass - but it's what she's paid to do, not report, so i understand...

Lisa,

Sorry you feel that way, seriously. It is hard for me to relate to that. I don't like the DH much, or the WC, or a million other things. But there is almost nothing would make me stop rooting for my team and disliking a certain style of baseball enough to be that turned off. Hell, the Reds had Pete Rose as a manager and Marge Schott as an owner, and the Padres, my #2 team, had Tom Werner as an owner and Steve Garvey as a player. Didn't stop me.
