Barra: The Mets Are Above .500—Compliments Of David Wright

David comes to life…and Barra loses his 10,000 marbles!

The Mets are probably playing several games above their heads. At any rate, it’s fairly easy to pinpoint the main reason that the Mets are 3 games over .500: David Wright, after going 2 for 4 yesterday, is batting .412.

But what happens if Wright cools off and ends up hitting, say, just a lousy .350? Wright is the closest thing the Mets have to a superstar, and, at age 29, making a pretty strong bid this season for the unofficial title of “Beat Everyday Player in Mets Team History” (think about it: this is his 9th season and his career batting average is .303. If he drives in more than 100 runs this season, it will be for the 6th time; Darryl Strawberry accomplished that only three seasons.).

So why am I thinking every time I see David Wright stroke another hit that he won’t finish the season as a Met? It’s beginning to look as if anyone who is a few games over .500 is going to be a contender in the NL East, and as long as the Mets maintain something like their current pace they will have to hold onto Wright. They can’t justify trading him as long as there’s a serious possibility that they can make the playoffs. But if they go into a tailspin and lose, say, 7 or 8 straight, then what would be the point into holding onto a $15 million salary?

How does this article get a link on BBTF? It doesn't say anything interesting or insightful, nor it is horribly Chassian.

A Repoz reference that I get!

I really don't see the Mets moving Wright. They have a team option for him next year, and he's the face of the franchise and having his best season at the plate. Bay comes off the books after next year, freeing up a lot of salary, and Wright will be 31 at the start of 2014.

and having his best season at the plate.

From 2004-2008 Wright struck out in 16-17% of his plate appearances
from 2009-2011 his Ks went up to 22 to 24%

right now he's at 14.8%, he seems to have [finally] resolved that K issue (he K'd 35 times in 121 PAs in September 2009- after coming back from a beaning from Matt Cain on 8/15/09- some have traced his rise in Ks to that incident- while his Ks were up all of 2009- they went up even more after the beaning and stayed up - until this year

Wright's OBP is absolutely batshit this year so far.

His career would look a whole lot different with an age 29 season in which he hit, say, .380.

If Wright hits .300 the rest of the way, he'll hit .325 for the season.

If Wright hits his career high for a season of .325 for the rest of the year, he'll finish at .357 for the season. I think that's a pretty good idea of the upper end of possibility for his season.

It'd be an impressive season too. Probably end up with an OBP in the .450 range.

Because people will either talk about how horrible it is or the Mets. Either one works here.

Whose career wouldn't? Cobb or Hornsby.

Wright figured if he was going to look like Bagwell at the plate, he may as well hit like him too.

Well, he's up to .418 as of this minute. What would he have to hit the rest of the way to sink below .300?

And his defense has been eye-popping too. The throws, that were scary for years, have been sharp. I know I'm biased, being a Met fan, but he's the best player I've seen this year.
