Baseball America: Callis: Red Sox: Breaking The $10 Million Barrier

The Red Sox spent in excess of $10 million on their draft, which may be a first in draft history.

Records for yearly expenditures by clubs are incomplete. But while an exact total isn’t available yet, it’s certain that Boston’s draft spending exceeded eight figures this year.

The Red Sox spent $8.99 million on their 12 choices in the first 10 rounds, including $3 million on first-rounder Casey Kelly, $2 million on fifth-rounder Ryan Westmoreland and $1 million on fourth-rounder Pete Hissey. They paid out another $1 million on four late-rounders: 13th-rounder Tyler Wilson ($300,000), 27th-rounder Hunter Cervenka ($350,000), 35th-rounder Carson Blair ($200,000) and 50th-rounder Kyle Stroup ($150,000). [Stroup was the 1,504th and final player selected in the 2008 draft.]

That takes Boston to $9.99 million, and it signed 13 additional players at a minimum of $1,000 each (at least a couple of those got more substantial bonuses), taking them past $10 million. They also offered $2 million to 20th-rounder Alex Meyer, only to get turned down.

Thanks to Bob Dulibation.

I'm pretty sure the Royals also spent $10 million, and the Pirates came pretty close.

Agree with #1, and several other teams spent some serious bucks on their first rounders. Most teams seem to at least be trying the draft and development route these days, and willing to spend money. Also, lots of teams have cash right now, which makes it a lot easier to stomach the bonuses.

Since money on the draft generally brings big returns, and is not subject to the luxury tax, we should expect this only to go up and up and up. If even one of these guys pans out to be an average major leaguer, the $10 million will be repaid and then some before the guy is even eligible for arbitration.

Meanwhile, the New York Mets pay slot.

Royals are at $9.815M for their first six picks. I'd guess they're over $10M as a whole too.

$10MM for a good draft crop seems like a MUCH better investment than $10MM on the free agent market.

Why would you spend $10M on a number of guys who could give you six solid years of service when it could buy you 5/6th a season of Carlos Silva?

agreed, it seems that teams more recently have realized this to an extent.

I thought the Cubs spent close to $12M when they signed Samardzija; I think the differences between some of the records might be a matter of accounting. You could also add the cost spent on IFAs, of which the Sox did not spend much at all this year. Of course they also offered Meyer $2M and got turned down, so they were willing to spend more.

According to this Samardzija got 7.25 million.

The value of Sam's deal was kind of a variable; IIRC it could've been worth as much as $10M if he stayed with baseball (which he obviously has). At the same time both Kelly's and Westmoreland's deals are listed by MLB as being worth a bit less than the number BA cites because of the way it deals with multi-year bonuses.

Regardless, it's good to see the Sox go out and spend some money this year.

Didn't Teixeira or someone get a huge bonus a few years back?

I thought Travis Lee got $10 million just by himself? Or does that not count as the draft?

... and the Angels have all but stayed out. This is the third or fourth season they didn't have a first-round pick.

That wasn't the draft. He was drafted, but the team drafting him made some technical error, and he became a free agent.

The business of baseball is like the manufacturing of sausages.
