Baseball America’s Top 10 Prospects: Arizona Diamondbacks

Corey Myers is going to be 32-years old.

1. Trevor Bauer, rhp
2. Archie Bradley, rhp
3. Tyler Skaggs, lhp
4. Jarrod Parker, rhp
5. Matt Davidson, 3b/1b
6. A.J. Pollock, of
7. David Holmberg, lhp
8. Chris Owings, ss
9. Wade Miley, lhp
10. Patrick Corbin, lhp

The Diamondbacks’ talent level also improved significantly on the minor league level in 2011, and they now boast one of the deepest pools of pitching talent. Skaggs is one of the best lefty pitching prospects in the game, and Holmberg and Corbin give Arizona two more promising southpaws. Jarrod Parker returned after Tommy John surgery cost him all of 2010 and earned a spot on the postseason roster.

Dipoto and Montgomery oversaw a draft that added even more mound talent. The Diamondbacks had two of the top seven picks and landed Trevor Bauer and Archie Bradley, then followed up with Andrew Chafin (supplemental first round), Anthony Meo (second) and Evan Marshall (fourth). The Angels took note of DiPoto’s role in Arizona’s reconstruction, hiring him as GM in October.

Does Bauer have a shot at the opening day rotation?

Right now, it seems the #5 spot in the rotation will go to one of Bauer, Parker and Miley. Won't be surprised if Bauer and Parker are in the rotation by the All Star break... and maybe even sooner if the Dbacks decide not to offer arbitration to Joe Saunders and save $8+ millions.

I'm surprised Borchering is not in the top 10. That's either really good news for the Dbacks farm system or really bad news for Borchering. While his defensive value is diminished by his move to left field, he is still seen as having the best power bat in the system...

Wouldn't the D-Backs be long-term smart to not break camp with Bauer, even if he proves himself, and then call him up around mid-May?

Well, Ben Sheets is done too, so the Dbacks are even, after all these years...

I'm not. He was behind Davidson going into the year and didn't improve at Visalia. The pitchers are all fantastic talents, and while Owings and Pollock aren't in Borchering's class as a hitting talent they're better all-round players.

The real question here is whether there's going to be room for Davidson, Borchering, and Goldschmidt. All three are really 1Bs.

It sure seems like DiPoto did a lot of good in a short period.

While I can't argue that Borchering's stock didn't rise, since he doesn't really have a position, the fact that he is a switch hitter more than closes the miniscule gap between him and Davidson offensively. I believe he has more upside growth, and a better power bat.

20 year old switch hitters in A+ with a Hr every 22 AB and a .801 OPS should not be downgraded so quickly.

My guess is he will struggle in LF though as much as he has struggled at 3b and 1b. I think he'll make a fine switch hitting DH some day.

If the D Backs are smart they hold on to him, and let him play AA next year, and then AAA Reno in 2014. He'll put up monster numbers in Reno, and might just be good trade bait at the age of 22. Or if they decide to adopt the DH in the NL, he will have value to the D Backs.

So this means he will be dumped in the next two weeks for a C Grade reliever.

DiPoto has been a central figure in Arizona player personnel moves since 2005. Really has handprint has been all over the roster since day one of the Josh Byrnes era.

California League. Visalia (which is a good home run park). Strikeout rate went up, walk rate went down.

Yes, he should be downgraded.
