Baseball America’s Top 10 Prospects: Colorado Rockies

Still pulling for Chris Buglovsky! (double checks indy rosters)

1. Drew Pomeranz, rhp
2. Nolan Arenado, 3b
3. Chad Bettis, rhp
4. Wilin Rosario, c
5. Tim Wheeler, of
6. Trevor Story, ss/3b
7. Tyler Anderson, lhp
8. Kent Matthes, of
9. Kyle Parker, of
10. Josh Rutledge, ss

Fortunately for Colorado, its most recent drafts look more productive. Even if Matzek turns into a bust, the 2009 crop already has sent Rex Brothers to the big league bullpen and features three of the system’s top position prospects in third baseman Nolan Arenado and outfielders Tim Wheeler and Kent Matthes.

The 2010 group includes a promising arm in Chad Bettis and two more bats in Kyle Parker and Josh Rutledge. Potential five-tool shortstop Trevor Story, a supplemental first-rounder, looks like one of the steals of the entire 2011 draft.

The most disappointing thing about Rex Brothers is that he's only one person. It would make more sense if seeing two pitchers warming up in the pen, you ask who they are, and the answer is "The Rex Brothers". Or even better, a whole bullpen full of Rex Brothers. Then they could sign Molinas to catch.

Marcel Lachemann, who had been a special assistant to O'Dowd for 10 years and his most trusted adviser, resigned in October because he disagreed with how the organization was developing pitchers.

Does anyone know any specifics about the nature of the disagreement?

Well, Rex Brothers is a twin of Mitch Williams, so they'd be sorta brothers if Mitch made a comeback. But don't think you'd want two of them in your bullpen unless you really like walking the bases loaded.

TOP PICKS

2006 Greg Reynolds, rhp
2007 Casey Weathers, rhp
2008 Christian Friedrich, lhp
2009 Tyler Matzek, lhp

Pretty dismal stretch since Tulowitzki

Damn, I missed that. You'd think that Etkin would report on that, but he didn't specify in this article, Lachemann just mentions a difference of opinion. Unless it's buried in twitter, no explanation from the Post beat writer (Renck), either.

Thoughts on Arenado? He's generating some buzz here, tho mainly due to high RBI totals at Modesto and in the AFL.

Matthes seems pretty old (24) for high A.
