Baseball America’s Top 10 Prospects: Washington Nationals

Maybe The Condredge Holloway Story isn’t over yet!

1. Anthony Rendon, 3b
2. Lucas Giolito, rhp
3. Brian Goodwin, of
4. Matt Skole, 3b
5. Nate Karns, rhp
6. Christian Garcia, rhp
7. Eury Perez, of
8. Sammy Solis, lhp
9. Matt Purke, lhp
10. Zach Walters, ss

The future is bright for Washington largely because ownership, general manager Mike Rizzo and scouting director Kris Kline have shown they aren’t afraid to take chances and spend money in the draft. After hitting the jackpot with Strasburg and Harper as back-to-back No. 1 overall picks in 2009-10, the Nationals pounced on elite prospects who slipped because of health questions with their next two top choices. Third baseman Anthony Rendon (2011) and righthander Lucas Giolito (2012) now rank as the top prospects in a system that has been thinned by graduations and trades.

Classic example of a system that looks uninspiring due to a load of talent recently sent to the majors. They should be in good shape for years anyway.

I see that Chris Marrero's name is conspicuously absent from this top ten list.
I had thought that the Nat's management were still high on this fellow; or have some shortcommings surfaced in the recent past that would have them no longer considering him as an MLB player?

Marrero simply hasn't shown the power bat everyone expected, his other tools are subpar, and he's been dealing with injuries (2012 was basically a wasted season). He's not a top-10 prospect at this stage of his career.

Don't forget, also, that the Nationals traded Alex Meyer, who would also have been in this list.
