Baseball Canada announces names submitted for World Baseball Classic Provisional Roster

Baseball Canada has submitted to WBCI for approval, the names of 23 players to appear on their Provisional Roster for the upcoming World Baseball Classic March 2nd-19th. The official Provisional Roster will be announced by WBCI on January 17th.

The remaining five players elected to fill out the Provisional Roster will be announced at a later date.

The roster features 12 players who played Major League Baseball in 2012 including Justin Morneau of the Minnesota Twins, Russell Martin of the Pittsburgh Pirates, John Axford of the Milwaukee Brewers, Jesse Crain of the Chicago White Sox, Michael Saunders of the Seattle Mariners and Brett Lawrie of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Joey Votto will also be there, but apparently has to finish some sort of insurance process first. Ryan Dempster unknown but I’m guessing unlikely.

BTW, other news:
Trout is out. Players confirmed to be playing for Team USA include Mauer, Wright, Giancarlo Stanton, Braun, Tulowitzki, Brandon Phillips, Jonathan Lucroy, Chris Perez, Victorino, Glenn Perkin and Vinnie Pestano. Still nothing confirmed about any starting pitchers.

I guess if the WBC settles in an equilibrium that includes most of the top hitters and zero top pitchers, that could be a pretty interesting tournament.

No wonder Norichika Aoki isn't going to be in the WBC (he said to the Japanese press that the Brewers weren't actually encouraging it)--they're already going to be missing five players.

The WBC will begin just as the Maple Leafs and Habs are eliminated from playoff contention. The timing couldn't be better for Canadian sports fans.

Having Canada or one of the Non-Cuban Latin countries win the WBC would possibly be the kick in the pants that the American players would need. Not because of any public outcry, but simply because they'd probably get so sick of hearing about it back in the MLB clubhouses.

I suppose this is why I'm not in love with the WBC, because the pitchers aren't in top shape during the tournament.

Also, has Canada figured out who's playing short yet?

I'll second this. I really like the concept of the WBC. It's a fun, enjoyable tournament in a sport where you generally don't see tournament play at the highest level. But it would be so much better to see more of the top pitchers, and see them pitching at least 4 or 5 innings a game. Bud really needs to think about replacing the stale *Some Star Game with the WBC in mid-July, assuming the Asian Leagues would be on board with doing the same.

Cale Iorg and Jonathan Malo are the listed ones on the roster. I'd guess Iorg.

Despite this list, Tyson Gillies is tweeting that he's honored to be selected to the Canada WBC team, so it looks like the Kamloops Komet will be joining Philippe Aumont as part of the Phillies contingent.

Gillies was on the PDF at TFA.

Ah, there's a PDF. I thought the full list the article is referring to had not been made public yet.
