Baseball fans trashed the MLB Players’ Weekend black-and-white jerseys

MLB Players’ Weekend returned for its third year on Friday, and fans are roasting the league’s decision to introduce solid black and white Players’ Weekend jerseys for every team in 2019.

In the past, teams wore special edition jerseys for Players’ Weekend, but still retained their usual team colors. This weekend, every baseball game on television will be almost indistinguishable, and you might forget which teams are playing if you aren’t paying attention to the scoreboard.

The Chicago Cubs, thankfully, wore their usual blue caps on Friday to add a splash of color to their game against the Washington Nationals. For teams wearing solid white, however, it’s nearly impossible to read the logos and nicknames on each jersey. If you’re checking out highlights from across the league, every game looks the same.

In addition to all the other insults, I’ll note that the players in white vaguely resemble cricket players, which I strongly doubt was the intent of whoever had this idea…..

With the white batting helmets, they reminded me of storm troopers.

Did anyone at the games get a good look at them? I wonder if they look better in person than on TV.

I've seen them described as ice cream men and stagehands or line cooks. At least the teams and League saved a bundle of money instead of buying uniforms customized to each team, so there's that. Then they'll pass the savings on to you!

Ridiculous on every level. Zero redeeming features.

I was at the Mets game. it looked ridiculous. Names on back of jerseys were unreadable.

Steven "Matzy" Matz was introduced as a pinch-hitter by that moniker around the 13th inning of kind of an important game. the kids this was supposed to appeal to were snug in their beds by then, I expect.

Finally a topic that everyone agrees on. It was like a team of ghosts against a team of vampires, stupid beyond belief.

I cleansed myself of this by attending a 1869 era baseball game today at Connor Prairie museum in Indy area today, The Red Stockings against the White River Baseball Club. Great navy/white wool duds by White River, and those classic White and red trim by the Red Stockings. They had the lemon ball and played barehanded of course. The umpires outfit was terrific, and they handed out rule sheets to the fans, sitting on flat benches, blankets, and any chairs fans brought. Nice wood red covered bridge along the RF line in the distance.

The Cubs all wore blue caps yesterday. Today they're all wearing white caps. Except for the pitcher, who's not allowed to wear a white cap. So he's wearing black. #PlayersWeekend

Tony Andracki @TonyAndracki23
Cubs wore the all-blue caps yesterday in uniformity with Lester, but were told before today's game everybody but the pitcher has to wear the white hats.

So this weekend is all fun and games...except there're also rules and stipulations.

Are we having fun yet???

This sounds delightful. I wonder if they do this in Chicago.

Dan Szymborski @DSzymborski

What's amazing is that somebody thought this idea up. Then told someone else who thought it was a good idea. And they had group meetings, panels, got cost projections, bids, worked with the marketing people on a cohesive plan. All this for the worst uniforms in baseball history. You could literally find an abandoned strip mall, find the ruins of a Caldor, break the padlock that was installed in 2002, and go in and find better clothing than these uniforms for the players to wear for these games.

- zackly

the team in white looks like those old fashioned milk delivery guys. the guys in black look like Darth Helmet

it would be better if the white team's name/numbers were in black and the black team's numbers in white. so you could, like, see them.

these are the absolute worst unis since those white sox shorts - and those weren't as bad because you got to see a lot of leg

what i want to know is was this the PLAYERS idea? if it was mlb "marketing" what i want to know is - who zackly was the test audience? because they ain't sellin those jerseys or caps
   18. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 24, 2019 at 05:10 PM (#5874142)
For Yankees @ Dodgers today, the umpires are wearing their light blue shirts, so at least they don’t look like extra infielders on the wide shots. However, for Nationals @ Cubs, and I assume some other games, the umpires are sticking with their black shirts, making it hard to distinguish them from the black clad players with just a glance.

My standard for Worst. Uniforms. Ever. is the travesty of the Turn Ahead the Clock promotion and -- as awful as those uniforms were -- at least you could figure out who was playing whom from just the broadcast or pictures.

For a few minutes, it was fun messing with the uniform colors on Madden and the MLB game on the old Xbox. Then it got tiresome real quick.

turn ahead the clock was 20 freaking years ago - had to look it up because i couldn't remember any weirdo ahead astros uni - and they didn't do one

did find a pic of barry lamar bonds (oh myyyyyyy) in the SF uni and i gotta say if folks really think he did all those drugs after the 98 season they need to go look at that pic because he does not look different than he did in the 5 years before

Change for the sake of change is as inane as tradition for the sake of tradition. Ugly-ass uniforms this weekend.
   26. asinwreck Posted: August 24, 2019 at 10:40 PM (#5874227)
The black uniforms look like comfortable pajamas. The white uniforms manage to be less legible than the late-60s White Sox uniforms that had blue numbers on blue jerseys. As such, they have my vote for worst uniforms in MLB history.

Good work, Rob Manfred.

having this the weekend of a classic Yankees-Dodgers series further makes me wonder if MLB has a prankster on the payroll.

I didn't hate it quite as much as most people because black is at least one of the team's regular colors, so these mostly just looked like a garden-variety unattractive alternate uni.

It was super-irritating not being able to read the names or numbers on the visiting team's jerseys, though.
   34. caspian88 Posted: August 26, 2019 at 04:44 PM (#5874572)
The black jerseys weren't that bad, but I suppose their immediate comparison to the white jerseys helps them.

The white jerseys were a crime and whoever came up with the idea should join the Black Sox and Pete Rose in the ninth circle of baseball hell.

So, what if the Dodgers and Yankees just ran out their last night in their real unis. What exactly was MLB going to do?

Fine them? What if the teams reply with the same "pound sand"?

The uniforms were even more annoying on the highlight shows. Watching while multi-tasking at BBTF (or somewhere), and trying to figure out who was playing didn’t work very well.
