Baseball Image of the Day: Babe Ruth and George H.W. Bush

Today’s image is the oft-reproduced image of Babe Ruth and a young George H.W. Bush. I love photos like this, where we have one historic figure (and Babe Ruth is a true historic figure) is with another historic figure long before one of them is historic.

I love photos like this, where we have one historic figure (and Babe Ruth is a true historic figure) is with another historic figure long before one of them is historic.

It also serves to instruct us as to bright, joyous alternate futures that might have been. For example, consider a well-timed colossal clout to the nads.

No dice, likely; GWB was born in '46, so there's a chance he was already alive when this pic was taken.

Gamingboy, the Putin picture is fantastic.

Most of the other pictures posters have linked don't fit this category: It is not just two famous people in the same picture. It needs to be the case that one of them in the picture was not famous at the time the picture was taken.

For example, this picture shows Woodrow Wilson. Immediately behind his left fist is John Goodman, before Goodman appeared on Roseann or was famous in any way. (Note: Someone should have taught Wilson how to hold a baseball.)

Looking at the Daddi Martyrdom of St. Stephen, Stephen was stoned to death by a rather sad little mob. You've got a guy in yellow without shoes that stole his wife's hat, a guy in green try to do a lame wrestling double-axehandle while wearing a plastic mask modeled after Mordred in the 1981 Excalibur, and a guy wearing a pink dress about to slap him with his non-throwing hand with his other hand casually placed on his hip.

That's up against Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Clinton and GWB (assuming it was said before Obama, and at any rate we can't really assess Obama until his term ends). The competition is pretty uninspiring.

In a hundred years' time, I suspect that the post-Johnson presidents, down to probably GWB, are going to be about as memorable as the post-Lincoln presidents down to TR. Nixon will only be remembered for Watergate, much like Andrew Johnson is only remembered for being impeached, and the rest will fade into the haze of history until 9/11.
