BASEBALL: New Braves spring training ballpark named CoolToday Park

The new spring training home of the Atlanta Braves has its name: CoolToday Park.

Tuesday the Atlanta Braves announced a partnership with CoolToday for the naming rights of their new spring training ballpark, slated to host its first game on Sunday, March 24, with the Braves taking on the Tampa Bay Rays at 4:05 p.m. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“As part of our commitment to maintain a lifelong relationship with our community, this partnership with the Braves organization, City of North Port, and Sarasota County will cement our presence and strategy for southern Sarasota County,” said Jaime DiDomenico, President/Owner of CoolToday. “The Braves have a proven track record of building strong ties to the community they operate in and we look forward to enhancing those ties going forward. I’m very excited about what the future holds.”

In practice, the name is LameAlways, but they can’t admit to that, can they?

You know, the Braves take a lot of flack for that, but the city isn't blameless. If you go look into the situation, the city made a lot of promises to the team. Then, when the time came to make good on those promises they strung the Braves along while diverting the funds into the Falcons. I think there was even an email link were the city was promising things they clearly had no intention of delivering on.

And keep in mind, the relatively cheap improvements the Braves were asking for were conditions of the lease agreement. The city owned Turner, the lease was up, the Braves asked the city for improvements before they'd sign a new lease. If my lease on my house runs out, and I ask my landlord to make some improvements, and he refuses, how am I not within my rights to leave?

The shadiness with Cobb is a different story, but the two events should really be considered somewhat separately.

"Just ask Kissimmee!," the spring training home the Braves are leaving, is probably more correct anyway.

Or Boston or Milwaukee. See, nobody has more experience building ties to communities than the Braves.

It's probably for the best if the Grapefruit League coalesces in a smaller geographic area like the Cactus League has, and the west coast is as good a place as any. There are now 10 teams between Ft Myers and Lakeland, a little over a 2 hour drive between the 2 furthest ballparks. The other 5 are close together on the east coast. 4 of them have newish parks and probably not moving anytime soon, but the Mets park in Port St. Lucie is positively ancient (1988), so I could see them moving west sometime. St. Pete currently does not have a team, and if they lose the Rays to Tampa, they could make a bid.

Yes. The Astros were in Kissimmee.

Wikipedia sez the stadium is in Kissimmee.

Huh. Looking at the map that's true, but every advert says Orlando, and I've been down there for something like 13 straight years and the phrase "Champion Stadium at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Orlando Florida" is more or less drilled into my brain. I think all the parks are part of their own incorporated township anyway so its probably neither.

Um, the Braves were given a sweetheart deal when they got the stadium in Atlanta and now Cobb county is giving them a sweetheart deal.

Well, according to Google maps, it's probably neither. The complex is nowhere near the borders or either Orlando or Kissimmee. However, Google maps does give its address as 700 S Victory Way, Orlando, FL 34747, and it's on Disney property which has the address in Orlando. It's not in Orlando proper, but neither is it in Kissimmee, though it is much closer to the latter.
