Baseball News, Scores, Analysis, Schedules

But there is a corollary consideration to such status: the game’s talent is being consolidated increasingly in the teams that are in their championship windows. The distinction between have- and have-not status seems more extreme than it has in some time – at least since the start of this decade, and perhaps beyond – with teams appearing increasingly willing to define themselves in one of those two camps. Zach Kram of The Ringer explored the phenomenon earlier in the month.

It's a shame this article isn't getting any 'Hot Topics' love.

Synthesising two separate FanGraphs articles, it suggests that the 'middle class' of baseball is getting hollowed out, as teams are consciously either in 'go for it' or 'stay out of it' modes. The latter are building solid cores of pre-FA players so they can enter into the former.

The headline is not exactly sexy.

Not bothering to get the headline right doesn't do much to help it get traction. The user-generated content here is pretty good, the managerial effort, not so much.

I would have thought that the second wildcard would cause more teams to delay blowing it up or sign a couple of players to achieve mediocrity. But that doesn't seem to be happening. The second wildcards this year, who thank goodness both lost, were shockingly decent teams, not teams that were expected to be decent.
