Baseball not really on Smoltz’s mind any more

According to Doyle: In accord with the highest authority.

Former Atlanta Braves great John Smoltz spent more than 20 years pitching in the big leagues.

On Friday, he stood in front a row of cameras in Hattiesburg and confessed that the first time he picked up a baseball since retiring in 2009 was recently when he was asked to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at a Geogia high school.

The future Hall of Famer admitted “it didn’t go too well” but that he doesn’t miss it at all.

...Smoltz,currently a broadcaster for TBS and the MLB Network, does know, however, that he doesn’t plan to get into coaching anytime in the near future.

“There’s not going to be any desire to get into the game,” he said. “Especially with the philosophies that exist today – I just can’t fight that system.

WTF?

"a Geogia high school"
Finally they fixed how they spell that state to its proper pronunciation.

I hereby declare this the Mets/Braves chatter.

Everyone should check out Keith's awesome light brown leather blazer.

I always liked Smoltz as a player because I liked how he pitched and that he had a beard, but he seems like a bit of a weird and unpleasant guy. Can't stand him on TBS in the playoffs.
   4. Lassus Posted: April 07, 2012 at 01:14 PM (#4099937)
NOT FAST ENOUGH, BOURN.
   5. Lassus Posted: April 07, 2012 at 01:15 PM (#4099938)
Wow, looking in slow motion, that incoming slide to an ankle could have been the end of Dickey's season or career.
   6. Lassus Posted: April 07, 2012 at 01:25 PM (#4099945)
KNEEL BEFORE WRIGHT, GIMPY!
   7. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 07, 2012 at 01:25 PM (#4099946)
Wright has looked healthy and sharp in the first two games of the season.
   8. Lassus Posted: April 07, 2012 at 01:29 PM (#4099949)
They made it clear that one was out with the old walls, but I just wish they would never, ever, mention or show the smaller field, as it makes me sad. They should be thinking about me.
   9. Lassus Posted: April 07, 2012 at 01:39 PM (#4099954)
Dickey looking good so far.

So long as we're complaining about things on SNY--as in #8--I'm not a big fan on the little box in the top left corner. Too much going on there.

EDIT: To add, I don't like the visuals for balls/strikes, I think that's a little busy, I think numbers is the way to go.
   11. RB in NYC (Now Semi-Retired from BBTF) Posted: April 07, 2012 at 01:57 PM (#4099958)
And while we're on the subject of terrible things, that ad for the "Party City Deck" was ten types of awful. Gracious.
   12. Lassus Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:08 PM (#4099959)
Ike, you should know that Jair is not afraid of you. You have to swing at that pitch.
   13. Why Bloody Valdespin? Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:20 PM (#4099960)
Speaking of annoying things on SNY, Jason Bay.
   14. RB in NYC (Now Semi-Retired from BBTF) Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:20 PM (#4099961)
I have to say, if the Mets don't give up a run all season, I like their chances of not finishing last. On the other hand, if they continue to average two runs per 12+ innings, I don't like their chances of avoiding 140 losses.

That one wasn't gone in the old park.
   15. Why Bloody Valdespin? Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:21 PM (#4099962)
Lucas Duda is teh awesome. He is fun to watch swing a bat.
   16. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:21 PM (#4099963)
I was about to remark on the CLE/TOR game this afternoon and its linescore, but Brandon Morrow just did what Brandon Morrow does and made it half-moot. Four no-hit innings, then a walk and a homer and he's allowed two runs on three baserunners. There's something seriously wrong with his approach with men on, or something.
   17. Why Bloody Valdespin? Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:21 PM (#4099965)
That may not have left with the old dimensions, but it was absolutely smoked.
   18. Lassus Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:21 PM (#4099966)
That one wasn't gone in the old park.

Wright's? Yes, it was.

Not Duda's. Bittersweet. Sorry, to me, it is.
   19. RB in NYC (Now Semi-Retired from BBTF) Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:22 PM (#4099967)
The Mets hit two home runs and you get a free Axe body spray? Haven't the fans at CitiField suffered enough?
   20. RB in NYC (Now Semi-Retired from BBTF) Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:24 PM (#4099969)
Wright's? Yes, it was. When they repeat it four times, they aren't just making it up.
I meant Duda's, for the record.
   21. Lassus Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:24 PM (#4099971)
Now, if they had move or add some seats forward, it won't look as lame.

I meant Duda's, for the record.

Yeah, sorry, my bad.
   22. Lassus Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:26 PM (#4099973)
Come on, Tejada, time to whack slap one into the gap.
   23. RB in NYC (Now Semi-Retired from BBTF) Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:27 PM (#4099974)
No worries.
   24. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:29 PM (#4099975)
Just sayin' you might want to check out the Indians game at some point, if you've got the mlbtv.
   25. Lassus Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:30 PM (#4099976)
Tejada has good ABs. He can take a walk.

OK, Murph, bust it open.
   26. Why Bloody Valdespin? Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:30 PM (#4099977)
Livan!!!!

Get him into the game, Murphy.
   27. Lassus Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:31 PM (#4099979)
Just sayin' you might want to check out the Indians game at some point, if you've got the mlbtv.

Well well. Ubaldo's appeal serving him well.
   28. Why Bloody Valdespin? Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:32 PM (#4099980)
Oh well.
   29. Lassus Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:32 PM (#4099981)
Ahhhhhh hung up on him. Bases loaded!
   30. Why Bloody Valdespin? Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:41 PM (#4099984)
Meh.
   31. RB in NYC (Now Semi-Retired from BBTF) Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:41 PM (#4099985)
That one was gone in the old park too.

Not much of a visit from Warthen.
   32. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:44 PM (#4099987)
Oh well, Lawrie breaks it up and ties the game.

Least he's on the ol' fantasy squad.
   33. Why Bloody Valdespin? Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:55 PM (#4099993)
Um, thank you, Fredi Gonzalez?
   34. Why Bloody Valdespin? Posted: April 07, 2012 at 02:58 PM (#4099995)
Thole! It would have been sad if they didn't score here.
   35. PreservedFish Posted: April 07, 2012 at 03:03 PM (#4099997)
Not sure how I feel about Keith's beige leather jacket wool vest combo.
   36. Why Bloody Valdespin? Posted: April 07, 2012 at 03:21 PM (#4100001)
Livan is some sort of Wizard.
   37. Lassus Posted: April 07, 2012 at 03:24 PM (#4100003)
Ike Davis with the Hernandez scoop.

I vote yes on Keith's outfit.
   38. PreservedFish Posted: April 07, 2012 at 03:33 PM (#4100005)
I kind of love Livan Hernandez. He absolutely is a wizard.

Duda!

Who needs defense?
   40. PreservedFish Posted: April 07, 2012 at 03:38 PM (#4100008)
Nicknames for Nieuwenhuis?
   41. Lassus Posted: April 07, 2012 at 04:02 PM (#4100013)
Come on, Franky Frank.
   42. Lassus Posted: April 07, 2012 at 04:10 PM (#4100016)
No wonder Smoltz doesn't care about baseball any more.
   43. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 07, 2012 at 04:12 PM (#4100017)
So, will Beckett break his on-year, off-year pattern?
   44. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 07, 2012 at 04:15 PM (#4100019)
Not a good start. (And not much velocity so far, either.)
   45. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 07, 2012 at 04:20 PM (#4100023)
Not a good start.
   46. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 07, 2012 at 04:32 PM (#4100027)
Anybody else here for Sox / Tigers chatter?

The strike zone has been really tight for both pitchers. The belt is the absolute top of the zone, and the corners are not generous.
   47. Dan Posted: April 07, 2012 at 04:45 PM (#4100032)
Way to move the runner, Aviles.
   48. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 07, 2012 at 04:56 PM (#4100037)
(I'd rather chatter here, and leave the minor league thread for minor league discussions. I'm gonna have to check out from chatter in 15 min, though.)

Since the Game Chatters has pretty much died, I for one support a Daily Catch-All Game Chatter such as this one.

Yes, they appear to have tightened the strike zone this year. They may have juiced the ball, too. I'll give it a couple more weeks, but if we're back to '90s offense, I'm out. That plus the second wild card is just too much.

Uh oh, Jordan Schafer lead off HR off Moyer.

I kind of love Livan Hernandez. He absolutely is a wizard.

Livan Hernandez is a fraud and a loser. He'll always be happiest on bad teams because he is a horrible human being.
