Baseball Picture of the Day: “Thanks for the hint, Jason.”

18 days until the greatest words in the world are said.

By which I mean “Pitchers and Catchers report today.”

“It’s a Boy (or Girl)”, “I Do”, “You’ve won a million dollars”, “I love you” and “You have been accepted to [prestigious university here]” are just runners up.

All Parents, Married People, Millionaires, Lovers and Snobby High-Level Collegiates can complain all they want.

Today’s image comes from a Nationals event that took place JUST YESTERDAY:

And now, my guess of how Jason Marquis ended up doing this:

“Who are you?”
“I’m Jason Marquis.”
“Who are you again?”
“Jason Marquis, 2009 All-Star, member of the 2006 World Champion St. Louis Cardinals.”
“Wait, I’m sorry, I didn’t hear you.”
“I threw a no-hitter in the third-place game of the 1991 Little League World Series.”
“Yes, but I’m sorry, I still don’t know who you are. You are wearing a Nationals jersey, after all, and you are not Ryan Zimmerman or Stephen Strasburg. So I don’t know who you are.”
“Maybe this will help. I’ll hold my name in front of me the entire time.”
“Oh, you are Jason Marquis! What the hell are you doing on the Nationals?”

Y'know, that's not actually Jason Marquis.

“I threw a no-hitter in the third-place game of the 1991 Little League World Series.”

That no-hitter comes with an asterisk. He did it against Canada. ... Another footnote to the 1991 LLWS, Marquis also pitched a good game against a team which featured this stellar baseball player.

When Marquis signed with the Nats, I was surprised he got so much money ($15 million/2 years). He was pretty good last year with Colorado. However, after his strong first half (11-6, 3.65 ERA), he reverted to being what he really is, a league average pitcher. His second half reflects that (4-7, 4.56 ERA). I don't begrudge any ballplayer for a team overpaying him. But is it really the case that it costs $7.5 million a season for a league average pitcher?

Here are Marquis's CHONE projections for 2010:
30-starts 8-wins 11-losses 177-IP 194-hits 74-BB 98-K 15-HR 7-HB 100-runs 92-ER 4.68-ERA

Marquis probably deserves a bump for his durability, but that does seem like a lot of money.

Yes. Can you name a league average pitcher who has signed for less in the last couple of years?

Yes, yes it is. 175 IP of 100 ERA+ is a good 3rd starter and is easily worth $7.5M.

I looked up "value" on fangraphs and it tends to confirm your judgment.

The value they give Johnny Cueto, for example, is $7 million. He pitched 171.1 innings with an ERA+ of 97. Livan Hernandez had a "value" of $7.7 million: 76 ERA+; 183.2 IP.

It's funny how much someone can get paid just for having the ability to go out and throw 6-7 innings every five days with an ERA of less than 8.

Oh, you mean $18,500,000.

How would you guys compare Doug Davis and Jon Garland to Marquis? They seem roughly comparable but Marquis got a much better deal.

But he's so durable!

You've got to watch Fangraphs "value" for pitchers, since they use FIP to calculate value not ERA or RA. But, if the ERA/FIP are close, it's not bad. I trust it much more for hitters.
