Baseball Prospectus: On The Beat—The next managers

Some usual, and some not so usual, managerial suspects from John Perrotto.

They call it the Silly Season in NASCAR. It is that time right after the stock car season ends, in which drivers and pit crews began jumping from one team to another, the sport’s version of free agency.

What happened last week could be described as Major League Baseball’s version of the Silly Season for managers.

They call it the Silly Season...

Google hits:
"Silly Season" + Premier League: 1,690,000 (Soccer: 1,110,000)
"Silly Season" + NHL: 1,600,000 results
"Silly Season" + NASCAR: 1,560,000 results
"Silly Season" + NFL: 1,230,000 results
"Silly Season" + Baseball: 1,220,000 results (MLB: 980,000 results)
"Silly Season" + NBA: 1,150,000 results

Snark aside, I do hope Sandy Alomar Jr gets a chance.

Mike Sarbaugh is the interesting name on that list to me, mostly because I've never heard of him.

Interesting. I had only heard "Silly Season" in the context of the PGA, referring to the small, non-PGA tournaments played between PGA tour seasons (the Skins, celebrity pro-ams, etc).

I'm amused that he talked about Ryne Sandberg's "low-key" approach. I remembered reading a lot about how fiery Sandberg had been as a minor league manager. Sure enough, courtesy of the interwebs:

2007: by June 26th, ejected 4 times and suspended once
2009: ejected for the 5th time on June 29th (twice in three days at that point)
2010: ejected for the second time on May 27th.

A post at Bleed Cubbie Blue in 2010 noted that Sandberg was ejected 2 times as a player and then "he gets ejected that many times in a month", without any specific numbers. At any rate, the one thing Sandberg doesn't seem as a manager is "low-key".

Yeah, but he's writing for Americans, not Brits or Canadians.

Maybe he says really offensive things to umps in a calm, understated tone.

It's a term so ubiquitous even Brits & Canadians use it.

FWIW, the silly season in NASCAR doesn't start when the season ends. It normally starts sometime around July or August. Most of the best drivers who have a contract that is expiring know long before the season ends where they are going to be the following year. For instance this year the biggest potential free agent was Carl Edwards, and he signed his new deal on August 4. Or to pick an even more extreme example, Dale Earnhardt, Jr announced that he was leaving RCR and moving to Hendrick the following season sometime in the middle of June the year he jumped.
