Baseball Prospectus | Schrodinger’s Bat: Defense and Pitch Classification

Some interesting stuff from one of my favorite Baseball Prospectus writers, Dan Fox.

But.........but Rob Neyer told me that Dick Allen was the bestest ever! How can this be?

Oh...wait....defense doesn't count. Forgot that part. Only those things that are easily tabulated without sensory input or actual thought.

Good old Dick Stuart. Range and hands of a tree stump........

Your 1965 Phillies:
1B Dick Stuart (.8)
2B Cookie Rojas (.5)/ Tony Taylor (.5) backed by Ruben Amaro for 53 innings!
SS Bobbie Wine (.7) backed up by Amaro (.2) with token appearances by Rojas and Dick Allen.
3B Dick Allen (all but 37 innings)

All those bold guys are Bottom 5 players.
Funny, at the time, Amaro was supposed to be as good as Bobby Wine, who was supposed to be a great defensive SS. Nichols Law might have been stretched to SS in '60s Philly.

EDITED To fix bad bolding

How often does Fox write stuff like this? If it is once a week, I might pay a dollar an article for it.

That SFR looks interesting.

It does look somewhat familiar :-)

No complaints though, Dan has mentioned my work pretty much every time he sends SFR in a new direction. Including stuff I don't have the data to do - minor league players.

Fox writes weekly, I believe. His stuff is far and away the best analytical work going on regularly at BPro right now. His is one of the few columns I always read. His series on SFR has been excellent work. His work on base running was also awesome. This particular column is typical work for him, and perhaps even a bit less thorough than normal, since he is splitting the column between two topics.
