Baseball: Taiwan coach grilled on match-fixing scandal

Woah, This new submission system is neat. Ooooohh, tags!

One of Taiwan’s most respected baseball coaches was questioned by prosecutors Thursday over his alleged involvement in a match-fixing scandal, officials and media said.

Television images showed Lu Wen-sheng, the head coach of Uni-President Lions, and his wife Hsieh Fu-yu being separately escorted by investigators to the Panchiao District Court near Taipei for questioning.

Agents suspected that Lu’s wife had passed on details about the Lions, including the starting lineups and injuries of individual players, to the leader of an underground sports betting ring, local newspapers said.

The papers, including Apple Daily, said agents and prosecutors had tapped the couple’s phones for half a year following a tip-off.

Su Tai-an, manager of the Lions, said Lu has been suspended as head coach for the time being while investigations were underway. Chief prosecutor Cheng Hsin-hung was not reachable for comment.

Sad news. It's devastating how much Taiwan professional baseball has fallen in the past 20 years due the gambling scandals. And with all the players going off to play in Japan or America, it doesn't seem like it's going to get any better. It's a vicious cycle.

yeah, when the pay sucks there's significant incentives for players to fix games. the average pay of players is barely better than that of an above average salarymen these days. and they're not going to make that sort of money for nearly as long, while their employment prospect after they stop playing sucks, not a good combo.

It was more of a panini press, leaving him with grill-like marks and unevenly cooked.
