“Baseball Tonight”: Theme poll: Good Charlotte vs. Staind

It’s…it’s…it’s as if Crocus Behemoth never ####### existed!

ESPN enlisted the help of notable musicians to provide their distinctive interpretations of the “Baseball Tonight” theme song during the 2011 season. We’ve already featured these versions of the song on air and in the ESPN Music section, but now we want you to help us crown the best version of them all.

For the next 11 weeks, we’ll have two artists square off in a poll for you to vote on. The winner will then face the next artist on the schedule and so on until the final week, when we’ll see who is the last one standing. Starting it off is Good Charlotte vs. Staind, so vote in the upper right poll now through Aug. 4.

Week 1 (July 29-Aug. 4): Staind vs. Good Charlotte
Week 2 (Aug. 5-11): Staind-Good Charlotte winner vs. Da’ Zoo
Week 3 (Aug. 12-18): Week 2 winner vs. Travis Barker
Week 4 (Aug. 19-25): Week 3 winner vs. Seether
Week 5 (Aug. 26-Sept. 1): Week 4 winner vs. J. Cole
Week 6 (Sept. 2-8): Week 5 winner vs. Tom Morello
Week 7 (Sept. 9-15): Week 6 winner vs. Grupo Fantasma
Week 8 (Sept. 16-22): Week 7 winner vs. Steve Earle
Week 9 (Sept. 23-29): Week 8 winner vs. Zakk Wylde
Week 10 (Sept. 30-Oct. 6): Week 9 winner vs. John Pizzarelli
Week 11 (Oct. 7-13): Championship between Week 10 winner and Grace Potter & the Nocturnals

Is the goal to pick the worst one? Because I'm not sure I can.

Someone gets a 10-round bye straight to the championship?

Not to be facetious, but isn't Travis Barker dead?

Staind vs. Good Charlotte
is analagous to
Kyle Davies vs. Bruce Chen

Does that work?

also, this poll is more offensive than anything Sam Hutcheson said in the Irabu suicide thread.

No. Bruce Chen had a couple of good years.

Lyrics to the Tom Morello version (sung to the tune of MLB theme):

Concession workers unite and take up arms against Selig
Revolution against corporate pigs- burn the ####### stadiums down
Free Mumia and let him throw out the first pitch, you racist vultures
Move down to better seats- #### the usher, white devil can't stop me

I maintain that Good Charlotte is the worst band in the world, so I guess I would pick Staind by default. How horrible.

If you asked me "Is there a band on earth worse than Nickelback?", the first one to come to mind would probably be Hoobastank, and then Staind, and then Sum 41, and then Good Charlotte. Seriously, both of these bands are both horrible and boring. It would be better if they got the guy who wrote "Feel The Heat Rays" to do it, for God's sake.

Well, there ain't no Fiona Apple. And if there ain't no Fiona Apple, I don't give a rat's ass.

Staind-Good Charlotte winner

In a conflict like that, there are no winners.

Steve Earle?

This is the great "cred sacrifice" of 2011.
   15. Walt Davis Posted: July 29, 2011 at 09:17 PM (#3888570)
Really, you'd think they'd have brackets.

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals

At least she's a patriot (not too unsafe for work ... and that's the longest link I've ever seen, let's hope it works)

If death isn't an option, I probably take this one. They toured with Prince for a while.

Good Charlotte isn't even the best band to include twins in it. I'll go:
1. The Bee Gees
2. Styx
3. The Breeders
4. The Kalin Twins
5. The Proclaimers
6. Doves
7. Nelson
8. Tegan and Sara
9. Gene Loves Jezebel
10. Elvis and the ghost of dead Jesse
100. Everybody Eng Chang tonight
1,000. Good Charlotte

Staind and Hoobastank both have some decent songs, which is much more than Nickelback can say.

The worst band in the world is Three Days Grace.

Shouldn't they have a Nancy Faust version or something? Or that indie cred baseball supergroup? Or Bronson Arroyo? Or Bernie Williams? Or Carmen Fanzone?

That's Tom Waits.

"The Wire" - different people, including Earle, sing it over the opening credits, and Earle plays a character in the show.

Way Down in the Hole Steve Earle, The Wire, Season 5.

Although, if I'm picking Earle from The Wire, I've got to go with the montage to end Season 2, I Feel Alright.

One of my favorite sequences.

Very cool. I don't think I've been in a theater since The Simpsons Movie, but I might have to break that streak this Christmas. (The IMDB message boards claim the trailer kinda sucks; haven't seen it myself, but I'm really just hoping they don't rip away my nostalgia and beat it to a bloody pulp in front of me.)

It's one of those horrifying blends of live action and motion capture animation.

I need to get this off my chest, since I was flicking on the news section of MLB At Bat to find out that Sublime's corpse with their new tool lead singer visited the MLB Fan Cave. Is there any sport with worse taste in music than baseball? Whenever music's involved it seems to be one band after another that's 10 years past their prime or plays crappy rock influenced by Creed. Why not get interesting bands? There's enough decent bands out there who would kill for that sort of exposure.

I'd rather they focus on instant replay and then sweat out the details.

Waits did write the song though.

In terms of the versions i enjoy the most, gotta go with Season 1 (Blind Boys of Alabama) and Season 4 (DoMaJe).

I hadn't heard about that Tintin movie, which must be based on "Red Rackham's Treasure"

One thing about the books (and it's been years since I read them) is that I cannot remember a single female character besides Bianca Castafiore.
