BBTF 2014 Softball Game

Time again for Softball!

Just quickly because I’m traveling now, but here are the details:

June 21st at Central Park in New York, specifically Field #11 in the North Meadow. Game time is 1 pm to 4 pm. I think the Orioles are in town that weekend to face the Yankees. I’ll be gone for another week but someone else can start herding cats ASAP as there’s not a lot of lead time for this game, unfortunately.

managed to find one of about 3 days all summer I probably can't make....lesson of the day - don't get married and let your wife plan vacations. Hopefully things change and I'll be there.

My knee never recovered from the doubleheader last year ** and I'm on the shelf, but I aim to come up anyway. Maybe I can pitch a couple of innings.

** Two weeks later, my knee was definitely feeling weak but I decided to play in our playoff game at work. I stopped short at third and the knee popped. Strained lateral collateral ligament, which is still wonky.

June 21st, yikes, that's soon.

Ummmm. Yes? I think. But probably yes.

That is so sweet that you all want to throw a party for me on my birthday. That's less than a week after tough mudder but I'm definitely down with playing again as long as I can get the weekend off. I feel like it should be later though.
   6. JE (Jason) Posted: May 02, 2014 at 09:48 PM (#4699334)
Good show, Shooty! Count me in, fellas, although I will need to drive up from DC that morning.
   7. McCoy Posted: May 02, 2014 at 09:50 PM (#4699335)
For those traveling I might be able to get you some good rates for hotels that weekend. Will know more when I check tomorrow. Let me know.

I have to work, and I have a race the next day, but I can come join to say hi at the end.

I'd really love to come, I did make a vow to myself last year that I'd come this year come hell or high water since I'd be on the continent.

Though no job until the Fall may throw a wrench into that financially. I'm definitely looking into how much it costs to get there though.
   14. Greg K Posted: May 03, 2014 at 09:57 AM (#4699524)
Huzzah! For 80 bucks I can take a bus that gets to NY at 7am, and then one that leaves at midnight same night. I'll think about it over the weekend before confirming that this is not in fact a very, very stupid idea.
   15. denDekker, Mattsui (jemile weeks) Posted: May 03, 2014 at 11:20 AM (#4699551)
I'll join--and attempt not to get lost in Central Park.

Greg, if you can assure me you're not a weirdo and don't mind cats I can probably set you up on my couch if you want to stay the night.

Sounds like fun. Count me in.
   18. Lassus Posted: May 04, 2014 at 06:58 AM (#4699895)
You're going to need to set up a live webcam feed for us of Greg K lecturing your cats on 16th-century property disputes of the landed gentry.
   19. Greg K Posted: May 04, 2014 at 08:21 AM (#4699901)
Greg, if you can assure me you're not a weirdo and don't mind cats I can probably set you up on my couch if you want to stay the night.

I am mildly allergic to cats, but I've lived with them all my life so it's nothing I can't handle. Thanks for the amazing offer! I'll have to dust off the Shooty Fan Club constitution. I'm out of town this weekend, so put me down for a strong maybe and I'll confirm the details during the week (hopefully before you get a chance to change your mind).

What's this year's over/under as to the inning of the first game when Ray finally shows up? If it's the third inning, I'll take the over.
   21. Ray (RDP) Posted: May 04, 2014 at 03:16 PM (#4700009)
Alas, this is the one weekend of the entire summer that won't work for me. I'm scheduled to be upstate at Total Tennis that weekend...
   22. Hysterical & Useless Posted: May 05, 2014 at 08:45 PM (#4700765)
I'm in. But Blastin, you have to show up early enough to replace me for the last hour. You did it once, so that makes it a tradition.
   23. Lassus Posted: May 05, 2014 at 11:04 PM (#4700866)
Hey, McCoy, did you end up with a possibility for hotel discounts?
   24. Rickey! On a blog from 1998. With the candlestick. Posted: May 05, 2014 at 11:16 PM (#4700870)

Just realized that the 21st is the first round of my softball league's playoffs (in Central Park). I'm not sure if it's the type of playoffs where every team qualifies. If there's any sort of cutoff, then we will certainly not make it. If I'm a top-three player on a team, it's in trouble.

Hey, when Lassus mentioned the lecturing thing I refrained from mentioning that time I lectured a group of empty chairs on my friend's driveway about the Sphinx's nose as Winston Churchill. I'll refuse to volunteer information, but I'm not going to flat out lie!

EDIT: In all seriousness I can figure something else out if necessary, so don't worry on my account if something else works better for the game.

Sure, McCoy, but to get all the way to San Fran you would first "have to take 3 bus transfers, walk a mile, and carry 16 bags of groceries while also carrying 3 babies." Are you sure that's worth your while?

   59. McCoy Posted: May 13, 2014 at 10:14 AM (#4705734)
Since I last looked it has gone up a little bit. Financial District is $180++ and in fact it looks like something might be going on in central Manhattan that weekend as all the space open is in south Manhattan around the World Trade Center and that area.

AT the Javits Center is the International Franchise Expo but I doubt that would gobble up a lot of rooms.

I'd definitely approve of either of those since I'd be missing this one...though as Shooty says, permits permitting and all. I know NYC is more easily accesible for most people, but if there was any interest in a related Long Island based game this summer or next, I'd be happy to look into fields and dates if any of this group were interested (or if there are some LI Lurkers who don't want to make the trip into the city).

I actually just got a jury summons for the week before (16-20). I've just written to have it deferred in case I get selected for a trial that goes into the following week as I'd be in transit from New York on the Monday, and am delivering a paper at a conference on the Thursday and Friday. I'm hoping I make a strong case. I'm not sure the sheriff's office cares as much as I do about a softball game, but I'm hoping the conference, which is kind of a big deal, is enough to convince them.

[But no one need worry, if disaster strikes and I am on a jury I'll just change my bus ticket back to my original plan and get back by Sunday night]
   78. dr. scott Posted: May 14, 2014 at 06:16 PM (#4706947)
Game in SF sounds fun. For those in the area you should know about the Pickup Softball Network that holds 1-4 games every Saturday weather permitting.. First game starts when there are enough people to field two teams. Usually by 10 am or so. They tend to play in St Mary's, Balboa, or Glen park fields. Used to go religiously, but have only been once in the last 6 years due to running like a sprained turtle after skiing accident.

Even if I don't, though, I'll try and send the singers from two games ago in my absence. Including the one who almost got in a fight with the other field.

McCoy, which Tough Mudder are you doing? I've done a couple and never had any problems like those described in the article. Just keep your mouth and eyes closed underwater. Particularly if you are not doing one on a farm (the ones I did were at a raceway and a ski area), you should have no problems.

Haven't posted in awhile, and primary lurker, but I just moved to NYC so if you guys need another I can likely make it. Usually do anything after the game? Or is everyone too gassed after their coming out of moms basement doing something "athletically" for one time a year?

bigboy, we went to some soccer bar (Shooty's choice) for a bite to eat and a couple of beverages. I can't imagine something similar wouldn't happen again.

As of now, I think I am in town and ready to be there - I will not know until around the 5th of June after I get back from the ASCO convention in Chicago.....

The soccer bar might have been Shooty's choice but he didn't enjoy being there, spending most of the time locked inside the men's room.

Firstly, it wasn't a "soccer bar", just a bog standard New York Irish pub. Secondly, all the horrible baseball I saw that day gave me diarrhea. I'm sensitive about these things which is why I can never go to Citi Field.

And all this time I thought your diarrhea was a result of eating this a little too quickly.

Put me down as a maybe... as luck would have it, I'm going to be in NYC for work the week prior and I'm now looking to see if I can get some stuff moved or barring that, maybe burn some vacation with family in the city...
