BBTF 2014 Softball Game

Time again for Softball!

Just quickly because I’m traveling now, but here are the details:

June 21st at Central Park in New York, specifically Field #11 in the North Meadow. Game time is 1 pm to 4 pm. I think the Orioles are in town that weekend to face the Yankees. I’ll be gone for another week but someone else can start herding cats ASAP as there’s not a lot of lead time for this game, unfortunately.

I am a maybe for the softball game. I'm new to NYC (moved here about a year ago to be with my, now, wife). Does anyone wish to attend the Yankees game against the Orioles on Friday, June 20th, at 7:05, or on Sunday June 22nd? The BBTF softball game on Saturday June 21st is at the same time as the Yankees game. Actually, anyone who periodically wants to join for a Mets game or a Yankees game give me a shout. My new beautiful bride is not so much a baseball fan (she prefers hockey . . . I just don't get it). Feel free to email me at snowymaine@gmail.com. Cheers, Catfish1974

I'm going to try to schedule my work for Sunday that weekend if I can. It's been a slow few months so I'm not in a position to turn down work, but I bailed last year and there's really no excuse not to show up in my own city.

Hey McCoy, are you still able to get hotel rooms - I dropped you an email, didn't hear back. Just checking, let me know either way....

I think a Yankees-Orioles game that Friday should be a go, right? I think we'll need a drop dead date for commitments to go to the game so we can get a block of tix. Also, I'm assuming your an A's fan so your softball game attendance is mandatory. Sorry, that's just the rule.

How are we possibly going to deploy a parade of one-out relievers in the final couple of innings unless we get a larger turnout? C'mon, lurkers! Hey you, semi-famous-person-who-thinks-he's-not-welcome! Female Primates! Mothers' basement dwellers! MLB Network lackeys! Hey, Calcaterra, we promise not to replace the softball game with a war reenactment if you show up. (Did I say if? I mean when!) Lounge denizens! Everyone sign up!

As an added bonus, bring a Bob Tufts baseball card to the game, and Shooty will be happy to autograph it!

As an update, I do indeed have jury duty the week before-hand. But luckily the bus station is near the courthouse, so I'm just going to bring my glove to court on the Friday and go straight there after.

For the record, his name was Anthony. Tufts, Shooty, and I got to chat with him again earlier this spring in Midtown when he and Snapper joined us for a drink. He was a really nice guy.

I'm still a little in shock, to be honest. I mean, there was nothing wrong with him. It's just a reminder that none of us are promised anything. Enjoy your family, play softball on a summer day, don't worry so much about stupid shit.

Anybody else coming up from the Philly area that day? I live in Ft. Washington if we wanted to car pool -- I might relent on my "I'm never driving in or through Manhattan again in my life" pledge for the right inducements.

Given that at least some people are coming in from out of town, is there a back-up meeting place in case the weather doesn't cooperate? If the softball doesn't work out we should at least get a chance to demonstrate the typical BBTF level of beer snobbery.

There had better be a goddamned tornado if people are citing weather as a reason not to play. I also agree a backup meeting location should be agreed upon.

The fear would be if the parks closed the fields, which sometimes happens, esp if there is rain the day before and they are worried about damaging the lawns. So yes a backup location makes sense.

The place we went to last year is probably the best, closest location. Kinsale on 3rd in the low 90's.

There really aren't too many bars in the 80's and 90's west of 3rd.
   166. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: June 08, 2014 at 08:12 PM (#4721542)
Let's just hope for good weather because with the World Cup going on the bars will be packed. As a last resort, we can just buy a bunch of beer and hang out at my place if the weather turns crap.

I'll be dragging my son Sam along, so we have another player. Don't know that he's played any ball in the last 15 years (I may have forced him to play catch with me 8 or 9 years ago, but that might have been just his older brother) but he can't be much worse than me. And I don't bring down the average that much.

And if I do, I know you're all too gentlemanly to mention it.

I'm still in the maybes, with other plans that weekend still up in the air. If I'm not traveling I'm definitely in though.

Philly-area people - what is a realistic drive time from Philadelphia to NYC to get there for the start of this? I am still a maybe, but leaning toward a yes - that would entail driving from Philly to NYC in the morning - back to Philly in the afternoon, and one last drive from Philly back to Long Island that night. Is that a stupid plan?

Not from Philly, but I think you're looking at a 2 hour drive each way to the UWS. If you left Philly at 10, should be in good shape for the 1 PM start, leaving some time to park, and walk to the field. Bask and forth for the day should be very doable.

But that last leg seems crazy. Depending on where on the island, you're talking another hour plus tacked on to your last leg.

The place we went to last year is probably the best, closest location. Kinsale on 3rd in the low 90's.

Dive Bar on 96th and Amsterdam. ABV on 97th and Lexington. Kinsale on 94th and 3rd. Five Lamps on 105 and Broadway.

I love "snapper's friend." I like to think of it as a sort of Kantian category of pure reason that only one person can inhabit at a given time. He's like the Highlander, Snapper's Friend.

Drop this handsome guy down to a probable. Looks like I'll be going to City Island for the first time ever that evening. Should be able to stay until ~3:30, but depends on the timing of dinner reservations.

I haven't been to ABV on a Saturday afternoon, so maybe it's empty, but it doesn't strike me as a post-softball hangout. If your party is down to four or five best friends, then maybe. But a dozen or so will be an odd fit. Dive Bar or Kinsale is what you want.

I have my doubts that any bar in Manhattan is truly a "dive bar."

What? Are you catching the early bird special?

Make the reservation for 7:30. You have time for at least the first round of drinks.

That part I know - I'm in Port Jeff, so closer to 2 hours - without traffic my house to Philly is around 3 hours, but the next time I can make it through or around NYC with no traffic will be the first.

On a summer weekend, this is madness.

That's about what I figured, but my alternative is hanging around Philly with nothing to do all day, knowing softball is being played two hours away. My ideal would probably be just spend another night down there so I at least have the hotel to go back to, but that's a decent chunk of change. (actually my ideal would be just go philly-nyc-then home, and let my wife take the train home from Philly, but I think that's the option that ends with me sleeping on the couch tonight)

You are mistaken, swamp-boy. Manhattan is large, and contains multitudes. Some of these multitudes give out free, shity hot dogs with their shitty beer, some of them have no doors on their bathrooms.

There was a crazy 30th-Street-station-to-Poughkeepsie public transport thing I used to do in college. Don't those connections through NJ transit into the city still work?

Blue Ruin in Hell's Kitchen by the back entrance of Port Authority. Billy Mark's in Chelsea opens at 8am, for chrissakes.

You could always take the train, either the Amtrak, or the Septa to NJT to the MTA. The latter would require a lot of planning, especially on a Sunday schedule.

BillyMarks is definitely a dive bar. I've met both Billy and Mark! I think. Hard to tell because they're twins. Anyway, if you want to drink with bookies and heroin junkies, that's your spot.

Are you some of you guys already wussing out? For shame.

I had no idea!! I knew they were brothers but not that they were twins. This explains a lot. BillyMarks is pretty much my favorite place in NYC, and I go once or twice a month. Sometimes I am greeted warmly with a handshake and a shoulder-clasp and a smile like an old friend, and spoiled with generous buy-backs, and sometimes the bartender acts like he doesn't even recognize me. When the latter happens, I am a little hurt and remind myself that he's a busy, popular dude that can't remember everybody all the time.

Five Lamps has a pretty big back garden which is nice if it ends up being a big crowd. A place like Dive Bar could work or could get crowded if twenty people show up and there's already people there

My bar going days are so far in the past...there were a couple of places in Tribeca we used to go to, but that was like 30 years ago. And then 10 years or so ago I went to Rocky Sullivan's down in the twenties, which was definitely kind of dive-y, for the Irish language classes. But Rocky's moved a few years back, I think to LIC.

I'm wondering what it says about the attendees that, when doubts are expressed about the existence of Manhattan dive bars, a veritable avalanche of names pours forth???

It does occur to me that Neckstabber might think any bar where they don't have a moonshine still out yonder is pretty hoity toity.
   196. Greg K Posted: June 13, 2014 at 09:24 AM (#4724737)
There was a dive bar I used to go to in Nottingham. It wasn't so much a building as it was a hole carved into a sandstone rock cliff. You had to drink your pint quickly as it would develop a thin film of dust on top of the beer from the walls and ceiling.

Though it also had been open since 1189, so maybe "dive" isn't the right term.
