BBTF 2014 Softball Game

Time again for Softball!

Just quickly because I’m traveling now, but here are the details:

June 21st at Central Park in New York, specifically Field #11 in the North Meadow. Game time is 1 pm to 4 pm. I think the Orioles are in town that weekend to face the Yankees. I’ll be gone for another week but someone else can start herding cats ASAP as there’s not a lot of lead time for this game, unfortunately.

I'm also a no on Friday night. I'm traveling in Saturday morning, playing softball, and then traveling home.

Friday night is weekly Strat-o-Matic night with my 9-year old daughter. Will be bringing my glove Saturday, though.

I'm coming into the city Saturday morning from Croton-Harmon, so no game for me Friday night either.

Lassus, what train will you be on? I'll be coming down from Peekskill, probably the train that gets to Harlem at 11.

I suppose at some point in my life I should go to this latest version of Yankee Stadium, but next Friday isn't going to be it.

The train that leaves closest to after my GF gets her coffee. But around then.

Survived Tough Mudder so as long as I don't get e coli I'm coming up for the game.

In an ordeal that I'm sure was just as harrowing, I popped a hamstring playing softball a couple days ago. I've previously put myself out of commission for 2-3 weeks doing that on two other occasions, but I played some softball today and was fine, so here's hoping!
   214. Hysterical & Useless Posted: June 15, 2014 at 01:35 PM (#4726554)
Greg, you'll just be a reminder to us all to Cano-it, to take it easy on those routine plays. [The way I hit they're pretty much all routine.] And since Shooty may be healthy this year we need somebody else to do the basepath comedy routine.

I want to be downgraded to "maybe" at best to play, "probable" to show.

all deprecation of other players aside, if I get 10 minutes beforehand to take a couple of swings after 20 years in hibernation, and it's not happening, I'm not playing and striking out. my defense would be even worse, especially left-handed and gloveless.

I may look to chronicle the events instead; I'm much better at that...

Do we have bats, gloves, balls?

I've got bases and a couple of balls. Some of you knuckleheads will have to bring a bat or two and more balls if possible. I've got my glove and I assume there will be enough people bringing gloves to share with those basement dwellers whose mothers never loved them enough to buy them one.
   220. JE (Jason) Posted: June 16, 2014 at 08:25 AM (#4727108)

If I'm a yes (which is above 50 % right now) and I drive - which is likely if I'm in - I'll bring four or five bats (26 and 27 ounces - plus one 30), and I'll throw my extra gloves and a few clinchers in the bag too.

BTW, my knee feels fine this year so look out, chumps. Grrr!

I can probably bring a spare glove with me, though it will probably be of the "well used" variety. Is a spare righty or lefty preferable?

Also, my brother has one of those weird rubber things you put on your thumb when you're batting. I could steal that if one of you guys has is hankering to look like a dork at the plate.

I haven't played in years, and I've lost almost 20 pounds over the last couple months. There's a decent chance of either me getting hurt or my now-too-big pants falling down. In fact, either one of those events would likely lead to the other. (I'm a versatile player... I can add insult to injury, or vice-versa.)

For equipment I'll bring a glove, and maybe a bat.

I should also bring a belt.

I'd say lefty, because it gives Howie one less excuse for not playing.

I'll see if I can swing three gloves. I'm catching a bus directly from the courthouse where I'm doing jury duty, so it's not a large bag I'm packing. It also just occurred to me that the security screening guys might frown on me bringing spikes into court. Though at least they aren't metal.
   232. JE (Jason) Posted: June 16, 2014 at 08:16 PM (#4727992)
Last I checked, the forecast for Saturday was cloudy skies and highs in the low to mid-70s.

Calm down there chief. No spikes. We don't want anyone getting hurt, and the bases aren't anchored anyway.
   234. Howie Menckel Posted: June 16, 2014 at 08:33 PM (#4728003)

I'm confident that if I arrive early and take a few swings and try to judge a few fly balls, I'll be excused from participation. No one takes a quarter-century off and gets away with it.
:)

Drop me down to a maybe, I'm sorry to say. Just spent the last 24 hours at Mt. Siani with the worst stomach bug of my life. Saturday is five days away, which I realize is a good distance, but I want to put enough distance from how I still feel before committing.

Spikes are a must! (Though technically they are soccer shoes...I couldn't find baseball shoes in England and I got hooked on them, so much more comfortable). But seriously, it would be a major injury risk for me to play in running shoes. I'd be slippin' and slidin' all over the place.

That's 23 Celsius for a high, 16 for a low. Unless you're actually a closet South Floridian, Greg, I think you'll be fine after the game with just a long-sleeve shirt.

"I'd say lefty, because it gives Howie one less excuse for not playing."

heh

just found my last mitt, from the mid-1970s
Rawlings, with an "Edge-U-cated heel"
Fastback Model 9380

wish it had a signature - my last bat was a Chris Speier (!) model, top half black and bottom half white

glove a little small and, well, flexibility so-so
recommendations?

   242. catomi01 Posted: June 17, 2014 at 09:22 PM (#4728924)
Move me up to the probable section. Inventory of what I'll be bringing (and regretting carrying through the city:

Assortment of bats (2-3 26 Oz, 2 27 oz, and 1 30 oz)
a bunch of mitts and gloves (all right handed) - 3 1B, 2 infield, 2 OF, 1 catchers mitt...1 of the infield gloves and the catchers mitt are small for softball, but better than nothing if anyone needs one. And 1 ambidextrous glove that so far has been a waste of money.
A couple of clinchers.

That's about the limit of what my bag can hold - but anything else we need that no one else has volunteered yet?

YES. Okay, I am super excited for this. Just for my own edification here:

Game is 1-4 -- that means meeting earlier than 1 for stretching and warming up etc?

How is communication done the day of the game, if necessary? Posts here?

Was a venue for afterwards officially settled on?

If desperate, I may be able to nab another player but given the large # of maybes I haven't tried yet.

I assume this means we have the field booked from 1 to 4. I can't imagine this group will be organized enough to be able to start playing at 1.

My bus gets into some place called 7th Ave and 28th St at 7am. So I was just going to make my way to Central Park from there and check out some sights depending on how much sleep I got. So if you guys see a homeless-looking bearded fellow napping by the field wake him up before the game!

Unless it's actually a homeless guy, in which case don't.

Also, got out of jury duty early so that won't conflict. Had to convict some innocent people to make sure I'd make it, but it's worth it in the end.

How will we know?!

Also that's a weird place to be dropped. Chinatown bus? Those are the best (if you live).

I have nothing to do in the morning so I can likely get to the field around 12! I'll try to find an extra glove too.
   258. Hysterical & Useless Posted: June 18, 2014 at 06:34 PM (#4729963)
Last year we started arriving early; I got there 45 minutes or so before official time, and Shooty and Bob Tufts and a few others were already there. If some other crew is still on the field we can heckle them. Or cheer ironically.

Shooty, are you implying that anybody who can't arrive before 4 doesn't get to join the post-game?

Howie, last year when we played--I swear this is true--I had not swung a bat at a pitched ball since 1980. And it was like no time at all had passed! (I never could hit, so the slow rollers and short pop ups were Just Like Old Times.) Provided great comedy in the field too, which you can see if anybody has the link to the photos.

Edmundo, if you're unable to come I think I may be this year's Designated Elder. I will expect all you whipper-snappers to show decent respect, or else GOML.

I was actually in NY for the first time in 20 yrs the wknd b4 last and kinda wished it had been then, but didn't get to do everything I wanted to do anyway. At least I didn't decide to go to Belmont and get disappointed that my first visit to a racing track didn't end up in a Triple Crown. Just enjoyed reading the commentary and remembering the days of getting a team together, adding my estimates of probabilities of team members showing up and deciding whether to call in some ringers.

Maybe you'll want to wear a sign around your neck that reads "Only wake for slow-pitch softball?"

Also that's a weird place to be dropped. Chinatown bus? Those are the best (if you live).

That's the drop-off venue for MegaBus, Tailor. It's actually quite convenient, as the 1 train station is right there. (You'll have to cross 7th to reach the uptown platform though.)

Very nice. Was the high last year into the 90s, or do I just remember it that way because I'm practically 80 years old?

June in NYC is much nicer than August. You are all welcome!

I would say mid to upper 80s. It was hot, but not unbearable.

Last year, August was gorgeous. I don't think it broke 90 once. July, however, was a hideous sweat-fest.

It looks on the map like Field #11 is in the park right up around 98th Street, so good job on picking somewhere nearby.

Here's the link for Kinsale Tavern on Yelp for anyone so inclined to read the reviews. It's on 3rd bet 93/94.

We'd probably miss the end of Germany-Ghana, but Nigeria-Bosnia could be fun!

I'm still a maybe. Unfortunately the visit to a sick relative on Saturday is now a funeral on Friday. So I probably have to work on Saturday. Hopefully I can get enough done by 1 p.m. in order to join you guys, but wouldn't count on it.
   279. Swoboda is freedom Posted: June 19, 2014 at 07:33 PM (#4731098)
Bad news. Mrs. Swoboda has to go to work on Saturday which leaves me a no go. Move me from yes to no. Sorry.

I have made my peace as a probable to show up and a doubtful to play.

But seems fun to bring a glove, and take a few pre-game swings. I like to hike, but I don't run or swing or throw anymore, which seem like modest prerequisites.

Might even inspire me to legit 2015 participation, and at best maybe I can pinch-hit or something...

I'm getting pretty pumped up for this. Please note that I still stink at softball, though.

Hopefully we get enough people to field two teams. It should be 10 on 10 for a good day of softball. I even bought a new glove the other day so that I don't have to use my chemically decayed old glove anymore.

lot of debate here whether I would most likely be injured swinging, throwing, running, or fielding. consensus seems to be "all of the above."
what's the attire, so at least the hot post-game waitress will think I'm a 'playah'?

Well, we have a designated pitch (Bob Tufts) and the batting team can supply the catcher, so as long as we get to 17, we should be fine. 18 or 19 would be better, but there are really no plays at the plate.

Rickey is slammed. Rickey gots tons of other #### eating up Rickey's bandwidth. Rickey is not happy about this.

Do we do the line you cross to the side of the plate, or does the runner actually touch home plate?

If you're asking about home plate collisions, I think you're a couple notches too serious for this gang.

You run towards the base. You try not to kill the pasty dork standing on the base, nor yourself. Preferably in that order. If anyone must die, it should be you. Whatever happens on the play, Tufts is in charge and his word is bond. Do not argue with Bob. Bob knows all.

And if you spike anyone, you have to play the rest of the game (and walk to the bar) barefoot, Mr. Fancy-Spikes.

And if you're running down the line and you see Tufts standing in your way just give up and be out.

Can we extend that to everyone, please?
