BBTF 2014 Softball Game

Time again for Softball!

Just quickly because I’m traveling now, but here are the details:

June 21st at Central Park in New York, specifically Field #11 in the North Meadow. Game time is 1 pm to 4 pm. I think the Orioles are in town that weekend to face the Yankees. I’ll be gone for another week but someone else can start herding cats ASAP as there’s not a lot of lead time for this game, unfortunately.

Either in the city or at Druid Hills.

Is the Hilton Atlanta acceptable, logistically speaking?
   404. McCoy Posted: June 23, 2014 at 03:37 PM (#4733761)
The Druid Hill one is at the intersection of Buford Hwy & Druid Hills Rd right next to I-85. I take it Atlanta is going to be the kind of city that requires one to rent a car.

I can do that for $80 a night.
   406. JE (Jason) Posted: June 23, 2014 at 03:38 PM (#4733765)
Also, are any DC primates interested in renting a car and driving down?

EDIT:
I can do that for $80 a night.

I think you mean $79. :)

Yeah. We don't exactly have the "mass transit" thing down here. We sort of have the precise opposite of that. Excepting DOWNTOWN. You can get from the airport to pretty much any general neighborhood via MARTA (barring Cobb County, natch), but for the most part, we're a car based city. Now, give me a good idea of who is coming and get them all in the same general area, and we can look into renting a van for the out of towners and saving rental fees for individuals.

And of course, we do have cabs and Uber.
   409. McCoy Posted: June 23, 2014 at 03:49 PM (#4733785)
Looked again, if you fly in on Saturday and leave Sunday I can get 1 extra room for someone for $29. After that the cheapest rate I can get for a bunch of people is about 60 dollars out near the airport. Looked at travel sites and it appears that you can get a room in the city for pretty cheap so for 20 extra dollars or so you can book a room at a normal rate and still have it be plenty cheap as compared to the big NE cities.
   410. Rickey! trades in sheep and threats Posted: June 23, 2014 at 03:53 PM (#4733789)
Well, I figured Sam would drive us all around. That Southern hospitality afterall.

I did just offer to rent a van, ya know. Or I could price out that "Furr-bus" party bus thing I see around town.

There's also a guy near me that has two horses.

My hamstrings are about the only part of my legs and arms that don't hurt.

My back hurt a bit Sunday morning. My legs were killing me this morning.

Starting to come around now.

I'd say Hilton Atlanta at $79 a night is probably a great deal at this point, gets all in one spot, and puts us close to the center of the city.

No, at the Hampton Inns Downtown or in Druid Hills.

WEEKEND UPDATE: I was just reminded that I am committed to a previous engagement the weekend of 9/20, so all plans should be shunted forward to the weekend of 9/27. Because I promised my mom I'd go watch her square dance in Macon on the 20th.*

*No. I'm not making that up. From the South and all, ya know?
   416. JE (Jason) Posted: June 23, 2014 at 04:03 PM (#4733803)
No, at the Hampton Inns Downtown or in Druid Hills.

Please sign me up for Hampton Inn Downtown, ok? Thanks.

And I assume you're not interested in driving down? (Disclaimer: I drive 75-80 MPH on interstate highways.)

EDIT: Just read Sam's goof-up. Is the Hampton Inn Downtown rate on the 27th the same as the 20th?
   417. Rickey! trades in sheep and threats Posted: June 23, 2014 at 04:06 PM (#4733808)
Let's get the core group into Downtown and move people as needed from there. Downtown is way cooler than Brookhaven (whose primary destination location is a CineBistro and a faux Irish pub next door.)
   418. McCoy Posted: June 23, 2014 at 04:08 PM (#4733811)
Looks like something is going on in Atlanta that week because rooms are tight through Friday and then inventory opens up greatly on the weekend. Looks like there is a public administration convention going on but I have no idea how big it is.

27th changes things a bit. On that weekend prety much the only dirt cheap options are at the airport.

I can do $89 a night at Hilton Atlanta with the travel site rate listed as $139 as of right now.

My legs are the worst. My back and arms are just sore, but the good kind you expect from exercise.

My legs are just stiff and creaky, like the old man I am.

If the 20th is off the board the only other weekend that would be off the board because hotel cost would be the first weekend of September. The 13th and 27th are both $89 a night.

Oh, and for the record, I am a no for an Atlanta game.

Possible for a DC game. My wife loves the Williamsburg Inn in Va, so I could probably make a game if I'm willing to spend $1500 on 3 nights there.

I booked my room for the weekend of the 27th. Coming in Friday night and leaving Sunday. Anyone else let me know if you want a room for that weekend and for how many nights. If you're driving down or going to rent a car and don't mind being 7 to 10 miles outside the heart of Atlanta I can get you a rate of $60.

@McCoy-- I wasn't going to rub it in, but I'm not sore either. My left shoulder is killing me but that's because I have a separated shoulder and torn labrum from an unrelated incident about three months ago. But so far as softball stuff goes, I can feel it a little in my quads but no soreness at all.

In DC I think you can play in the President's Park South without a permit. Outside of that I don't know of any cool locales to play softball at. perhaps Andy knows.

The South Lawn of the White House is a prime, under-utilized location. Certainly someone here has the chops to secure a reservation.

It used to be fairly easy to play softball on The Mall or Eclipse, but as organized leagues expanded, especially those with ties to Capitol Hill, that changed. Not sure what, if anything, is available on an ad hoc basis downtown, since I stopped playing in the mid-1980s, back when you could also openly drink beer while playing on The Mall. But if someone wants to organize a DC Game, I will come out of retirement, although I suspect it would only be a short time (an inning? a single AB? a play in the field?) before I was on the disabled list.

pounds hand on table, declares "I'M OUT!" of the mythical "Let's see who can be a tough guy who uses no painkillers after a softball game," in spite of 22-year break since last one.

no idea who would want to be in that contest (!), but I just popped an Advil an hour ago - maybe the 3rd of my entire life.
will switch to alcohol, God's preferred painkiller, tonight.

then, the seal broken, may find out tomorrow how much Advil costs at the store (grubbed one off a pal today).

:)

not sure it's an ETA you need so much as an intervention.

And I ache today like I've never ached. Sometimes when exercising after an extended period of inertia I am sore; but this morning I didn't feel sore, I felt old.

Same here. I can jog on a treadmill for an hour and feel fine afterwards, but apparently a few hundred feet of sprinting is too much for these legs to handle.

Jesus. I had 4 (well, 2 ibuprofen & then 2 acetaminophen, or maybe vice-versa ... both store-brand) over the course of 3 hours or so earlier this afternoon -- my usual regimen with a minor Crohn's flare-up.

I guess I'm not a big fan of pain; I'm not sure why anyone would be.

So all you under-50s, Julio Franco & I say kwitcher belly-achin'

Folks, you're using different muscle groups. If you don't play softball regularly you're using different muscles in a way you don't use them, and so -- this started happening to me at 35 -- you're going to be sore for a few days after your first game. Maybe even really sore, like, having trouble walking and getting up from a chair. I don't care how much running or tennis or ultimate Frisbee you're playing without issue.

The good news is that -- at least at age 40 -- once I play my first softball game of the year and go through the soreness the rest of the games don't hurt.

This is literally the only thing that feels different for me at 40 than at 20. I'm sure I'm not running as fast, but I don't feel that.
   448. Lassus Posted: June 23, 2014 at 08:36 PM (#4734066)
Ray speaks truth.

My worst post-activity soreness ever was after a 2+ hour ultimate frisbee game at 38 when I hadn't played in what turned out to be a shocking 13 years. I was sore for a good five days, and the first few of those I seriously wondered if it might hurt less to exit my four-story walkup by jumping out the window.

Just to chime in on the soreness discussion - I think of myself as being in pretty good shape (ran a marathon and a half Ironman in the past year, etc.), but I got to the field late and forgot that you should stretch before any physical activity, especially one you haven't performed in over 10 years. On my third or fourth at-bat, I definitely pulled a hamstring running out of the box, and I didn't help it by continuing to play for another hour, or by playing soccer on Sunday. Needless to say it is still pretty sore today. I'm not going to run on it for a few days and hopefully it will be ok for Sunday's soccer game, but we'll see.

thetailor was also the tallest among us, and took the lead on finding another bar after Kinsale's was full. If anyone needs more of a reminder identifying him.

I was in the black Mets 31 Piazza shirt and no hat but a blond ponytail.

I'm not doubting you there for a second, but try hitting a couple of buckets of balls at a driving range if you've never done it before. Doesn't matter what age you are. I did that when I was 17 and my ribcage is still feeling the agony 52 years later.

Sounds to me like the second game ought to be in NYC again....

Concur :-)

I would most likely show up for an Atlanta game in September, though August would be better for me.

You're missing DJordan who I think was in the Green shirt (or was that Diaz?) and you're missing the guy in the Gehrig Columbia jersey,(who would then be DJordan), who I believe tried to start some ARod centaur jokes once out on the field. Should have gotten beaned for that.

Pretty sure zonk wasn't there.

Batting 5 playing 2B on the winning team (Mike) is "denDekker, Mattsui (jemile weeks)" on BTF.

Right now I have four people for the ATL game(s.) We'll need more than four people.

I will make every attempt to go. Need to check the date.

Atlanta is tantalizingly close to SoFLA, although y'all are scaring me with these anecdotes from the DL. I was led to believe that this was a "softball game" where everybody brings coolers of their favorite beverages and sits around and talks baseball while watching other suckers play.

If anything, I'd be a late addition. I don't know what I'm having for dinner, let alone what I'll be doing on September [13|27]. Besides, I'm probably too weird for this bunch anyway.

SLAP!

I'm in for a game in Atlanta.

Mike Diaz here--I did, indeed, bat fifth and play second. I wore a green shirt to match my 'Canes cap. Second base in orange and green: my throwback Jemile Weeks costume.

The prospect of banjos and people imitating squealing, buggered pigs? Can you blame them?

It's a softball game, not a convocation of the Georgia Legislature.

I seriously doubt that's possible, assuming you're not a serial killer.

Yeah, yeah -- I know what they say about "assume."

These are totally made up but the line scores may have been something like:

W- 0110400 - 6
L- 0210010 - 4

W- 10010001 - 3
L- 00100000 - 1

I only remember relative scores. Game 1 was 3-2 us, then 6-3 you, then 6-4. Game 2 was 1-0 you, then 1-1 (I think) but ended up 3-1 after you guys scored in the Top 8 (in the extra inning we begged you to play).
   497. thetailor Posted: June 25, 2014 at 02:56 PM (#4735379)
Also I don't think I've seen it mentioned here, but djordan was Mr. Clutch -- he had a two out hit that was the dagger in Game 1(I think 2 runs scored?) and at least one other two out hit in Game 2. Duuuudeeee.
