BBTF ANNUAL CENTRAL PARK SOFTBALL GAME 2018

Date: August 11
Time: 10 AM to 2 PM
Field: Great Lawn, Field 7
Post-game meetup: TBA

I will update the above as we get more details. I don’t know who JE is booking the field, nor when we’ll know. But let’s start talking softball.

Last year’s thread. Much fun was had.

I saw Obo posted in another thread a while ago, I meant to pop in and ask him if he was coming this year, but missed the chance (I think the thread was a couple days old by the time I got to it). He's incredibly sneaky, shows up wearing a Gilligan hat, everybody chuckles, then he hits a double every at bat.

Hi guys! Just wanted to check in and say I'm excited to play. As it is summer, things keep cropping up, but I am hoping that this remains clear and we get to play. I'm also nursing a little back issue (Who isn't?) but I should be good.
   105. Howie Menckel Posted: June 20, 2018 at 12:48 AM (#5695876)
thetailor is a couple of decades short of many of the participants, so his plea for sympathy from a sore back is - DENIED!
;)

this Tin Man looking forward to it

Sorry guys, can't make it this year. I have to drive up to Maine to pick up my daughter from camp.
   107. Stormy JE Posted: June 20, 2018 at 10:49 AM (#5696021)
Hey, fellas:

We are...

CONFIRMED.

Details:

Saturday, 11 August
10am - 2pm
Great Lawn, Field No. 7 (Neither my first or second field choice but whaddaya gonna do? There's a shitload of demand for that day.)

You lousy degenerates owe me food and drink.

Now...

WHO'S CONFIRMED AGAIN???

EDIT: Hey, Swoboda, you suck.
   108. Lassus Posted: June 20, 2018 at 11:38 AM (#5696079)
I have to drive up to Maine to pick up my daughter from camp.

Really? Plenty of wood and roadkill up there. She'd be fine for the weekend.
   109. Lassus Posted: June 20, 2018 at 11:39 AM (#5696084)
I am most likely confirmed, but need to shore up details.

WHO'S CONFIRMED AGAIN???

My vacation ends August 2nd, so I should be there.

Yeah, what a snowflake. And two years ago, Ray didn't even have the cojones to ask his sister to postpone her wedding by a measly seven days. SEVEN DAYS.
   112. villageidiom Posted: June 20, 2018 at 02:00 PM (#5696267)
Thanks for your persistence on the booking, JE. I've updated the thread header. As we decide on pre-game or post-game, I can update further.

If you're in #102 above as a YES and you're not a yes, (a) you suck, and (b) let us know so we can update your status.

If you're not in #102 above as a YES, (a) you suck, and (b) make your status yes and let us know.

If you're in #102 as a YES and that's correct, (a) you have great character, and when it comes to softball the odds are (b) you suck.
   113. Hysterical & Useless Posted: June 20, 2018 at 02:46 PM (#5696325)
Lassus, is the staff photographer going to bring a camera this year? Phone pictures are great and all, but it just looks so much more official when the photog is using an actual camera.
   114. Lassus Posted: June 20, 2018 at 02:53 PM (#5696332)
Hopefully. Decision still in committee.
   115. Karl from NY Posted: June 20, 2018 at 03:33 PM (#5696379)
Confirming my yes for the game, though I have something else immediately after so no post-game activities. I have an actual camera too, not particularly fancy but it took our group shot last year. As for (b), I'm confidently reporting I'm in the best shape of my career.
   116. Hysterical & Useless Posted: June 20, 2018 at 04:20 PM (#5696434)
Howie, from the OTP thread:

a Sam Adams specialty ale.

On me pal, after the game.

   117. Chicago Joe Posted: June 20, 2018 at 08:21 PM (#5696581)
God, I hope we can do better than Sam (Adams).

Great job getting this confirmed, JE.
   118. Ray (CTL) Posted: June 21, 2018 at 12:37 AM (#5696757)
Confirmed I'm in.
   119. Greg K Posted: June 21, 2018 at 07:38 AM (#5696786)
I'm confirmed in conviction. But I've been too lazy to book anything yet.
   120. Lassus Posted: June 21, 2018 at 08:21 AM (#5696795)
Tips for newcomers time!

Bring friends. No, not to prove you have them, but because they will generally always be needed.
   121. Stormy JE Posted: June 21, 2018 at 11:03 AM (#5696890)
Also, someone please bring extra workout gear so that Lassus needn't lumber around the bases in his coin-filled cargo shorts.
   122. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: June 21, 2018 at 03:38 PM (#5697137)
put me down as a maybe. Will have to see how I feel about getting up at 7am or so.

I'm still in. Thanks for organizing, Jason.
   124. Ray (CTL) Posted: June 21, 2018 at 06:27 PM (#5697293)
Those cargo shorts... Those CARGO shorts... The wind resistance alone takes 20% off of his top running speed.
   125. McCoy Posted: June 21, 2018 at 07:50 PM (#5697333)
As of right now I'll be there.
   126. Swoboda is freedom Posted: June 22, 2018 at 10:39 AM (#5697756)

EDIT: Hey, Swoboda, you suck.

Well that is a little harsh ;(

Sorry, I will miss it and I am sure Jason will still provide the offense as well as the field.

   128. Hysterical & Useless Posted: June 24, 2018 at 12:40 PM (#5698683)
Confirmed yesterday that the 1st Useless grandchild will be born sometime from July 10 - 17. We will be down in Maryland to help out, likely for a week or so after the Event, so I WILL be back for the (obviously MORE IMPORTANT) event on August 11th.

Sorry to disappoint you all!
   129. Hysterical & Useless Posted: June 24, 2018 at 02:59 PM (#5698735)
Too late to edit 128, but my wife disputes my analysis of when the birth will be; she says July 10 is the latest, based on what daughter-in-law said to her. I was going off my understanding of what our son said. So, might be anytime between now and the 17th. As we just got back from a visit there this morning, we're both hoping for later rather than sooner. Need a break from traveling.

I think it was the same trend this time last year, then they started dropping out...I'm 99.9999 % on the two who came last year...then 75 % on one, and about 30-50 % on another after that.
   135. Hysterical & Useless Posted: June 27, 2018 at 09:14 PM (#5701175)
So, here's the update you've all been waiting for re: the coming Useless grandchild!

Absent any further complications, plan is to begin inducing labor the evening of July 10th, with birth possible on the 11th...or 12th...or 13th...apparently, the hormones required to stimulate the dilation of the cervix (which is kinda crucial if you're trying to squeeze the little person out) can take up to 3 days to act. We're all obviously hoping that they use the fast-acting variety and get it over as quickly as possible.

Yeah, I know this is all TMI, but this is what's going on in my life right now. Why should I be the only one here to suffer?
   136. Howie Menckel Posted: June 27, 2018 at 10:48 PM (#5701239)
the more catomis there are, the more likely I get to DH - which, for anyone who has played in one of these games, is acknowledged as a blessing to all

I can still smack the apple, but fielding..... not so much

plus I get to tell some stories during the game to two audiences instead of one

I trust that on the day of the event you will live up to your handle. EDIT: "the event" being the grandfathering, and not the softball game. At softball I don't expect you to be hysterical.

Yeah, just useless, right? That I can live up to!

As far as I can tell, my only "role" in all this will be to help with shopping & cleaning up, and to be an appreciative audience for whatever complaints, anecdotes, videos etc the kids want to share. So I can probably handle the job.

   139. Greg K Posted: July 02, 2018 at 08:13 AM (#5703597)
Booked!

My "yes" is now a full-throated "yes" rather than a I-may-still-back-out-at-the-last-minute "yes".

Five weeks away, folks.

We've got a field for four hours, in August heat. We could definitely use more players. We could probably use another whole team worth of players, if not two. If you're lurking, thinking it would be fun to play (you're right) but we have enough players already (you're wrong), step up.
   143. Stormy JE Posted: July 06, 2018 at 01:18 PM (#5706030)
FYI, fellas: The permit has been paid so the field is officially ours.

Now we get to spend the better part of five weeks debating whether to eat and drink afterward on Third Avenue or Columbus. :)

Well, the first hour is usually warm up/waiting for critical mass. And, there's no reason we have to use the full 4 hours.

After 2 7 inning games, people are usually more than ready to hit the bar.

I would say 3rd. There are virtually no parking lots in the West 86th area near the park, while there are a bunch of options in the $20-30 range on East 86/87th.

If we get enough people for 3 teams, we have enough time that each team can get in 2 games and also rest/spectate/heckle for 1 game. Or alternatively, if we get enough people for 3 teams, then when a bunch of people back out at the last minute because of weak excuses like "I'm stuck at the Dallas/Fort Worth airport" we'll still have enough for 2 teams.

(FWIW, that was my weak excuse 2 years ago.)

I'll second this, while walking back the "virtually no". Virtually no = some. I don't need some options, I need one. I can find under $20 on either side of the park, and I've yet to have an issue with any lot filling up the morning of Primer Softball. The ones on the east side are indeed more plentiful, and marginally closer to the field, so my preference is 3rd. But it ain't a strong preference.

I mean, really, wherever y'all pick for postgame, I'll park near there and figure out how to get to the field.

True, but the close ones on the West side are like $60. On the East side there are $30 options right on 85th and 5th/Mad by the tranverse, and $20 options a couple of blocks over.
   149. Chicago Joe Posted: July 06, 2018 at 04:10 PM (#5706254)
The first rule of postgame is do not drive after postgame.

Google review of Central Park: “The place holds good with the hype.”

Whew. Was a little worried there.

I'm fine with going east for drinks afterwards. It's been a while since I went out on the UES but Dylan Murphy's and Mad River I believe are a couple of cromulent pubs around 82nd and 3rd.

If it's a typical August day in NY, I'll be drinking more water at the bar than beer.

I had a friend who, while a college freshman, ran out of beer so he and his hallmates continued playing quarters with tap water.

Let's just say the results weren't pretty.

I bought a sandwich at a deli last time, if that counts.

I think I'm in town for just over 24 hours. But perhaps this time I wont drink for several hours immediately following the game, which would give me time to do things. I remember a few years ago Shooty and his wife were kind of enough to show me around the city (and put me up on their couch).
   156. Hysterical & Useless Posted: July 09, 2018 at 08:18 PM (#5707376)
This afternoon at ~3, the first Useless grandchild was hauled, kicking and screaming, into the light of day. Parents have not yet settled on a name for the poor guy, having rejected all 3 of my suggestions (Twinkletoes, Hiram, and I've Forgotten [the Third]). Feel free to place bets on the eventual choice among yourselves.

Virtual cigars to all when I see you on the 11th.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, and for the congratulations.

Been off-line for a few days, as we had to do massive furniture moving (which included dismantling the wifi set-up) in order to get rugs cleaned while parents and newborn were in hospital. And the system was too complicated for me to put back together, had to wait for the father to come home and take a break from fussing with his kid. Oh for the days when a new father's only duty was to stick out his chest and say "Dat's my boy!"
