catomi01.

Still need bases.

EDIT: And a postgame destination.

I have bases as well if needed...just a pain to bring them...unless I hear different, I will plan on bringing them.

My post game libations may be a bit limited. I'll be bringing the newly minted Mrs McCoy to the game and we'll be going to a steakhouse later that day. She doesn't really drink and I doubt she'll want to hang out with a bunch of heart attack victims.
DOES NOT RECONCILE

Current weather forecast for Central Park on Saturday is ~50% chance of rain up until noon, declining somewhat thereafter. Though I wasn't able to specify Great Lawn, so it might be that it'll just rain on the reservoir or down at the zoo.

:)

first pitch - will not be 10 am, I'm sure

Bad news - Catomi04 also out - seeking replacements, but there's a tournament that day in CT that a bunch of my people are going to, so not looking likely. And badder news, Catomi04 might also be out. On the brighter side, I will have bases, balls, and bats. Worse comes to worst I don't mind pitching for both teams like we did game 2 last year, if we end up short on players and no random tourists wander into the game.

Going to begin slouching towards Gomorrah in about 40 minutes. Staying at 14th and 1st (not Bushwick!). Where are the divea down therw?

Been a long time since I drank around there, but O'Hanlon's was a pretty good pub, and Crocodile Lounge used to offer free mini-pizzas (not sure if they still do). I recall the Thirsty Scholar around 10th and 2nd Ave. is also pretty good.
   214. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: August 09, 2018 at 06:24 PM (#5724372)

Re: quorum, I will be there by 11. Have about 15 miles (an 'easy' week amongst a period where every second week is 20+; I specifically planned a shorter week to line up with this game though!) in the morning and unless you want me there looking and smelling like that, best I go home and shower first. I guess I could get up at 5 but that's my weekday wake up time and I don't wanna. :)

Blastin, you're probably aware of this, but there's a NYRR 15-mile training run in Central Park on Sunday that you can do instead.

I'd like to pitch a few innings unless any objections.

I'll bring a bat or two. Do we need an extra glove?

What are the details again? 10am this Saturday 8/11 at the great lawn? Which field?
   217. Blastin Posted: August 09, 2018 at 07:42 PM (#5724397)

They do (well, free with a drink).

Thirsty Scholar is on 10th and 2nd indeed.

I used to go to Odessa and Higher Ground in my party days (23-28, mainly). No more, as an old married.

I'm running Summer Streets! It's my favorite run of the year!

Also, after softball and going to the Queens Night Market at night (very very excited about this also), I don't wanna have to run hard Sunday.

I'm going to have to bail out on you. I'm just not up for Lancaster, Pa round trip in a day (I"m gettin' old(er)). It doesn't help that I have three limo service runs on Friday for a total of 8 or more hours, depending on Friday night Philly traffic, which is always a bear in the summer.

Next year, I'll book a night to break up the trip.
   223. Greg K Posted: August 09, 2018 at 08:29 PM (#5724437)
I'm due in at 8:10 at something called 27th street. As I recall a leisurely stroll should get me to the field in time.

Yeah, latest forecast shows 90% probability of precip by 11 AM. Not just rain, but thunderstorm. Those who made the game 2 years ago recall what that means.

You're a limo driver?

Yep, doing it as a part time retirement job. Out here in Lancaster County, PA, we are within 3 hours of 5 airports. I'm an 1099 employee, so I can set my own hours (within reason). No benefits, modest pay, but interesting. My trips tend to be longer than those limo services in and around the big cities. We have a diverse client list, from a well regarded 6-12 girls academy with students from 30+ countries, world leaders in concert staging and sound to a hoist company based in Japan and the Lancaster Barnstormers (Indy League). Some folks don't say boo, but others want to talk and we have wide ranging conversations. The money I make and the money my wife makes at the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Museum (oldest operating pretzel maker) goes to our vacation fund.

Desafortunadamente, the jack-booted parks employees come around and kick you out.
Besides, I don't think I own a functioning bumbershoot. Good ones disappear, cheap ones break.

Desafortunadamente, the jack-booted parks employees come around and kick you out.

The good news is that, unlike the fascist red states of America that force hillbillies to drive around chugging their terrible beers from a cooler they keep on the passenger seat because of idiotic blue laws passed as a sop to Christian hypocrites, there are plenty of places to drink in godless New York at 10 in the morning.

Whatever happens with the game and the post-game destinations, post it here so the stragglers can find you.
   236. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: August 10, 2018 at 12:52 PM (#5724714)
Can we at least get a decision on East vs. West for whenever the post game happens?

The field looks to be equi-distant from E 86th and W 86th St. Anyone know a good bar near either?
   237. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: August 10, 2018 at 01:05 PM (#5724718)

There are perfectly decent options to drink on either side of the park. I believe some people were requesting East Side because there was better parking -- that's fine with me. Dylan Murphy's / Gael Pub / Mad River on 3rd Ave. around 82nd or 83rd St are all fine.
   238. Hysterical & Useless Posted: August 10, 2018 at 01:11 PM (#5724721)
Go east, young men, 'cause it's closer to MetroNorth. I gotta get back to northern Westchester by 5:30. Which means I gotta be at 125th St by 4:20.
   239. Greg K Posted: August 10, 2018 at 01:21 PM (#5724725)
Eep. I might be incommunicado after about 6pm tonight. Is there a short-list of possible bars you guys would be at tomorrow morning? I wouldn't mind visiting 8 or 10 bars before noon, but I draw the line at scouring every single one in Manhattan.
   240. Blastin Posted: August 10, 2018 at 01:26 PM (#5724731)
I also vote East. Mostly because the 4/5/6 has no construction this weekend!

But yeah, I like the ones mentioned. Mad River is great, I also like Brady's on 81st and 2nd. I'd pick Mad River first of all of them.
   241. villageidiom Posted: August 10, 2018 at 01:42 PM (#5724741)
I'm not going, and I don't drink, and I have no actual authority here, but let's make Mad River the official post-game and/or rain-delay destination. 1442 3rd Ave, near East 82nd.

It's not football season, so its status as a U. Wisconsin / GB Packers hangout should be irrelevant. But I'm sure they'll have Brewers/Braves on TV.

EDIT: I've added it to the thread header.

for out-of-towners who won't be in Las Vegas (or Delaware, or Mississippi) anytime soon but want to legally make some wagers, I'd recommend:

- take a train from midtown to Secaucus Junction (takes less than 10 minutes, but it lands you in New Jersey aka Soddom and Gomorrah).

- then, two choices:

- just sign up for a for a DraftKings Sportsbook app via iOS and Android or online at sportsbook.draftkings.com if you like, you can just make your bets there, then hop on a train right back to the Big Apple.

- if you want more of "the girlfriend experience," take a cab or Uber a couple of miles north to the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, which is home to the FanDuel Sportsbook. Here you can wallow... er, mix in with the fun people who let the mortgage ride on over-unders and hole-by-hole PGA golf wagers.

- Warning: You likely can't do this at the track tonight because of a Jets-Falcons preseason game. so tomorrow, or Sunday, or really any other day. and you can do the Secaucus Junction thing today, too.

- Other Warning: The House (almost) Always Wins (in the long run)

If you say that to a New Yorker, it means you're in Nassau or Suffolk county.

If you're in Manhattan, you're in "The City".

WEATHER UPDATE:

The good news is no rain is expected overnight.

The bad news is that thunderstorms are likely starting around 7am.

I'll try to arrive a few minutes early and post field conditions here.

   252. villageidiom Posted: August 10, 2018 at 11:37 PM (#5725037)
OK, things got interesting.

Due to likelihood of lightning my son's Eagle project is postponed. That frees me up for softball.

BUT

Late this evening my car threw a low tire pressure warning. I found a nail in it. Too late to get a new tire tonight I reinflated the tire, then drove around for 20 minutes to see if the pressure held. It did. If it is OK to drive on in the morning I'm driving to NYC for softball. If not I'm turning around and getting repairs.

SO

I'm a maybe.
   253. Chicago Joe Posted: August 11, 2018 at 02:54 AM (#5725052)
I’m not a maybe, but the quality of my play certainly is.
   254. catomi01 Posted: August 11, 2018 at 04:38 AM (#5725055)
If anyone in the city can provide an updated weather report before 7 it would be appreciated . Raining steadily out by me right now, so if we’re going right to the bar I’d rather not lug all my softball gear around.
   255. catomi01 Posted: August 11, 2018 at 06:49 AM (#5725057)
Fields closed for the day based on the parks hotline. Gonna take a later train in I think, let me know when everyone is going to be at the bar or alternate plans.

Also, just a suggestion, but if everyone still wants to go through the pantomime of "competition" and watch grown men flailing around, Fat Cat in the West Village opens at noon. They have ping pong, foosball and shuffleboard.

   279. Ray (CTL) Posted: August 11, 2018 at 09:22 AM (#5725098)
I’m out. Might as well head into the office early.
   280. Blastin Posted: August 11, 2018 at 09:51 AM (#5725104)
Blastin isn't a bar-type I don't believe.

I am definitely a bar type! I need the carbs in the beer!

I'm coming! Will be there around 1120

"So, Mad River is the definite meeting spot?"

Yes.

Will Trump fans be mad if I wear my "Make Racism Wrong Again" cap?
   281. Chicago Joe Posted: August 11, 2018 at 09:53 AM (#5725105)
Yeah, I’m in. See you guys at 11-ish.
   282. catomi01 Posted: August 11, 2018 at 09:56 AM (#5725106)

   283. Ray (CTL) Posted: August 11, 2018 at 10:13 AM (#5725107)
Beautiful day out now...Maybe Jeffrey at the Parks Department will open the fields?

(Chance of that happening: 0.0%.)
   284. Blastin Posted: August 11, 2018 at 11:24 AM (#5725121)

   288. Already Wasted Posted: August 11, 2018 at 01:37 PM (#5725149)
This cowboy is already drunk but I could still head yonder to that there watering hole to throw down a dozen more.
   289. Chicago Joe Posted: August 11, 2018 at 02:31 PM (#5725152)
For sure, wasted.
   290. Hysterical & Useless Posted: August 11, 2018 at 06:17 PM (#5725197)
Sorry I had to bail so early, guys, but I was the 1st one there...though Blastin went in before me. Had to get home, we're going to the theatre.

Everyone who didn't show up, you missed the best day of the year. The singer was great, the comic killed, and the showgirls...yowza!
