BBTF SOFTBALL GAME IN NEW YORK—AUG 17

I’ve got a field reserved in Central Park for August 17th. Time to get out of the basement and pick up a glove, if any of you even know how…

I'm in. Barring one of my semi-annual surgeries.

What time?

What time?

The field is reserved from 11 am to 1 pm, but if it's anything like last time, we can start earlier and finish later, I'm sure.

So come on, jerks, there is plenty of room in the Trust Tree!

I'm seriously thinking about coming, despite the 515 mile drive. It's unfortunate neither the Mets or Yankees are in town during that weekend though.

That's weird. On the other hand, the Brooklyn Cyclones are in town.

Also, all out of towners are welcome to stay at Ray's. I'm sure he won't mind!

disclaimer: I'm pretty sure I made this completely up.

Put me down as a very likely to be there maybe. If you look at google maps - what set of fields are we going to be on? I see fields in the north, south, and right in the middle of the park.
   11. McCoy Posted: May 14, 2013 at 10:01 AM (#4442451)
Now if we can only get some of that NYC can do attitude down here in DC and get someone to organize a Baltimore/DC softball game that would be outstanding.

It's a softball game, not a blind date.

Anyway, a number of us have already met each other - and lived to tell about it.

Others didn't make it back.

If the timing works out, would love to drive up and play (can pitch, never was a great hitter, now nothing much to speak of beyond "6-3"). Not clear that is likely however...if the son plays in All-Stars again, that usually runs to about July 10, and then we are doing research and associated publicity pretty much from the 18th of that month onward. Fairly good from about August 5th to 17th...classes start on 19th.

If there is ever one held down in Hobart/Schererville/Merrillville or Highland or some such Region location, it becomes more fairly trivial to make it, even with all the craziness.

I will be in England in July, and Ireland in August. Let me know if I should bring my glove.

BTF Europe-Fest is unlikely.

But if anyone is in the Midlands of England this summer, the Nottingham Baseball Club has open baseball training sessions on our field twice a week, and usually a league game on Sunday - ringers welcome!*

*for the purposes of the British Baseball Federation a "ringer" counts as someone who has two legs and knows what a force-out is.

Please do! We all want to live out our dreams of hitting off a Major League pitcher.

I had some at bats against Charles Nagy when he was in high school. Of course, I did not hit off him, but did take some fairly weak cuts.

I'm up for something organized in the DC-BAL area, or even PHI, just depending on when it is and what town. I work in all three, so it's just a matter of being in the right town at the right time. I would love to make Central Park, but unfortunately 8.17 is a work day for me. :(

Is beer allowed in CP? I know that Roosevelt in So. Philly is OK with it, but not sure about the DC or BAL parks. Can't play softball without beer...

Weddings are stupid!

Tell me about it. I was a co-star in two of them.

What other cities have meetups? It's been awhile (hint, hint), but the Triangle contingent has had a few. Not near enough people to get a game going, though.

Darn, I also have to attend a wedding that day. I figured it would have been a good excuse to visit NYC with my wife (we've been there only once).

I've never faced a MLB guy, but I did face two guys who have BB-Ref page and play against a former 36th overall pick, Ntema Ndungidi. He was out of this world! For a guy who did not have a background as a ballplayer, he took a lot of walks.

Put me down as a solid maybe. I had forgotten that we played those local kids last time. I do remember it was a very long, very fun day.

I'll show up and lurk, just like last time.

Wait, we had a "John the Lurker" who played, then vanished. Did you show up and actually lurk the game, but not play?

I can't remember exactly, but I was the least pasty person there. Hope that helps.

least pasty person

Though I wasn't there, I'm guessing "least pasty" helps a lot. Most pasty, not so much.

If there wasn't some creepy guy lurking in the bushes it could hardly be an event in Central Park, right? #allmyassumptionsaboutNYCarefromthe70s

Yes. I showed up quite late, watched the last few innings of one game from a sunny hillock, and drifted off shortly after you all started playing a match against the kids from the next diamond. All the time in the basement didn't do much for my social skills.

Yeah, these days Central Park is a nice safe place, especially during the day.

Also, if "John the Lurker" actually played then I'm afraid he needs to turn in his credentials.
