It was a draining win. It drained emotion and drained the Shea Stadium stands of fans, who left in bewilderment after Billy Wagner turned Mike Pelfrey’s 3-0 gem into a tie game on a 3-and-2 pitch with two outs in the ninth. “I was thinking there was no way that can happen right here,” Beltran said. “That was the last thing we had in mind, that they would come back.”
The fans who did stay were able to leave happy. So were the Mets. Wagner, who has a good relationship with Pelfrey, felt free to grin when he was asked what he says to the starter after ruining a stellar eight-inning outing: “I tell him, ‘Go nine.’
It was pretty interesting that Pelfrey was able to convince Willie to let him start the 9th. I was hating on Pelfrey but it seems like he has turned a corner. His stats in his last 3 starts:
21 IP, 1.29 ERA, 15/6 k/bb, 0 homers, 20 hits, 1.24 WHIP.
It should be this hard to win a game.

I started highlighting the unearned runs way back in Mid/late April and reached the same conclusion. They choke like dogs on defense with men on base.
I've seen lots of bad defensive teams, but can't recall the last time I witnessed a choking defensive team.
EB should not be allowed to face righties. Jackson and Reynolds both hit righties better than Byrnes. Byrnes should be platooned, and seldom start against righties. Thats more important than worrying about Jackson playing first when Webb is out there. On the flip side, Tracy should never start vs. lefties. He can't hit them, and never will.
Offensively, lineup wise, the platoon that is in the teams best interest is Tracy/Byrnes.
Defensively vs. righties, I'd be fine with Tracy at 1b, Reynolds at 3b, and Jackson in LF. But I just don't think the team is going to play Jackson over Byrnes in LF vs. righties. They don't have the balls to do that.
Man, when things go bad, they really go bad. I'll be pretty surprised if Randolph makes it to the All-Star break.
He...he....
I know. Words like that don't fly around here. But watching it every day sure has felt like it. So today the defense was "great in the clutch".....they made some terrific plays late in the game to save it.
Thats baseball.
