Ben Cherington keeps faith - BostonHerald.com

The Red Sox are still in this.

Outfielder Cody Ross may be back by next week; at some point next month, Jacoby Ellsbury [stats] is expected back in center field; and eventually, the Red Sox [team stats] hope to salvage something from the snake-bitten Carl Crawford. Closer Andrew Bailey may be pitching by August, and if demoted Daniel Bard solves his problems at Pawtucket, he still may provide valuable innings in either the rotation or the bullpen.

And so, it may be that the best additions the Red Sox will make before July 31 will come from the stable of players they already possess.

It's still early-ish and by pythag they're like 34-29, but they feel way, way worse than that. When Gonzalez and Pedroia aren't hitting, this feels like a very weak team.

Well, they stood pat on a team that got their coach fired. That they struggled isn't a suprise.

I'm still confident that Gonzalez and Pedroia will get it going and that the return of Ellsbury, Crawford etc...will help.

The concern I have is they are starting to drift back. They are 5 out of the 2nd Wild Card right now and another slump of any meaning is going to put this team in a spot where it gets tough.

Last year right after the ASG the Sox went to Tampa and took 3 of 4 to about 8-9 games up. At the time I remember thinking that they had really put the Rays in a bad spot, not locking anything up but a spot where something big had to happen for Tampa to catch them. The Sox are in a similar spot now. There is a lot of season left and a lot of talent here but if they get 8-9 games back they are going to have a difficult time getting back in it, especially in what is a deep American League.

Beckett scratched from Sunday start with "shoulder inflammation". This club is on a knife's edge with the injuries and the Pyth underperformance. This could be it.

Unbelievable.

Interestingly, Franklin Morales appears to be getting the start instead. He's been pretty good in long relief, but that is not what I expected.

Youk and DiceK for Garza and Soriano. Get it done.

Thought experiment. If that trade happened - would the Sox be better off with Gonzalez 1B, Soriano LF, Ortiz DH or Ortiz 1B, Gonzalez RF, Soriano DH?

I would say it's time for Ben to blow it up and sell, but I'm not sure I'd trust the trading to the guy who traded cost-controlled, starting caliber position players at SS and RF for injured and mediocre relief pitchers.
