Ben Reiter’s “Astroball” & Carlos Beltran: The Next Great Manager

Astroball reveals Beltran’s significant role in shaping the Astros into a championship team. Indeed to my eye, the book seems to illustrate Beltran’s off-the-field contributions to the ball club even more than Hinch. As the elder statesman on the roster, the 40-year-old designated hitter took young players under his wing, presiding over the clubhouse kangaroo court, providing life advice to the team’s star shortstop, and analyzing Dodgers pitcher Yu Darvish, poring over video to recognize tells in Darvish’s delivery and explaining his findings to each of his teammates.

I think it's safe to say, THIS is ultimately what won Houston the World Series. Bravo to Beltran for figuring out such a vulnerability!

And I don't mean this in any kind of derogatory way to suggest there weren't a million other factors to the Astros 2017 championship. I'm a Cubs fan who ultimately understands 2016 doesn't happen without a huge adjustment to one of the best starting pitchers in the game: Case in point 10/16/2016 vs. 10/22/2016

You can question the reason for it happening. Personally I think this date in history has to be examined. Who was the starting right-fielder for the St. Louis Cardinals who later delivered the double in the 3rd inning that scored the 1st (and deciding) run of that game? None other than Mr. Carlos Beltran.

If the Cardinals brass hire Beltran as Matheny's replacement, I will be very unhappy (as a Cubs fan). But I will be genuinely impressed. This may be the hill Mozeliak needs to either live or die on. Proceed.
