This seems like an interesting example of how often a player's public reputation is markedly different from who the player is.

In the tradition of Kirby Puckett.

Seems to be a credibile allegation. But it occurred in 2015 and is basically down to a he-said, she-said situation, so I don't know what can possibly happen.

And Sano's denial was totally written by a lawyer.

Statement from the Twins:

Today, the Minnesota Twins were made aware of allegations involving Miguel Sano at an offsite appearance during the 2015 season.

The Twins, along with Major League Baseball, take these allegations very seriously. Until more information is gathered, the Twins will have no further comment.

Betsy's already gotten pushback (paraphrasing): "Why would he go after some photographer when he can date models?"

Sigh.

Strange how readily people are to accept allegations against athletes but disregard allegations from a girl who was 13 at the time about a guy running for President (and he was elected)

Athletes are often regarded as "different" from us, but people that manage to be seen as "like us" get insulated, no matter the field.

The issue with allegations coming out years after the event is that time elapsing means things become less clear.

The most powerful force in American politics is partisanship.

If only there was a means written into the system by which men and women with actual, functional consciences could remedy that error.

CBS story since twitter went private.

It should be a goal to live in such a way that if you hear an allegation of assault, your first impulse isn't joy over the opportunity to grind the ax that you're already carrying around.
   16. Lars6788 Posted: December 28, 2017 at 10:03 PM (#5598345)
I can see where players / personnel should be advised to not fraternize with 'outsiders' trying to get an 'in' with the ball club [taking pics for the team at fan events even if they may not be officially with the team], because you just don't know how certain actions / words are going to be misinterpreted - especially if a 'working' relationship gets terminated at some point.

#16 brings up a good point. It might also be smart for players to be advised to not sexually assault others.
   18. bookbook Posted: December 29, 2017 at 12:56 AM (#5598400)
Axe to grind aside, where allegationsof sexual assault are starting to be given greater credibility (sports, hollywood, news, entertainment) vs where they aren’t (business, school, church, restaurants, hotels) vs the messy middle (mainly politics) is fascinating.

Will this all even out? No idea.

I'd say the same principle applies in sports, too. I remember when Kobe Bryant was accused of rape, my reaction was that it was bogus. Eventually the charges were dropped, but I don't think I would have extended him such a benefit of the doubt if he didn't play for my team.

Stop. This was an insane person making insane claims. There are many credible allegations about that guy, who will not be mentioned -- but those aren't any of them.

There is. And "turning every conversation on a baseball message board into the same OTP thread" isn't one of the steps.

Shame. I doubt any recourse will occur. I wish so many powerful men didn't act this way.

I'll bet Sano gets suspended for at least as long as Chapman, who got 30 days. The allegations are older but the victim is willing to cooperate with the league's investigation, per MLBTR.

If I understood the CBS story right, shouldn't there be witnesses?

Are agents typically lawyers and if so do they have an obligation not to testify against a client?
   26. Mefisto Posted: December 29, 2017 at 11:27 AM (#5598541)
Even if the agent were a lawyer, s/he'd have to testify. Not only is there an exception to the privilege when it comes to crimes, but there's no privilege under the facts as given anyway.

I'm not sure this split is right. Business (i.e. office environments), schools, and churches already went through reckonings (probably the wrong word) about sexual harassment/assaults to various extents. Obviously the issues haven't been resolved in those environments, but they were at least exposed somewhat prior to the current scandals and increased awareness in sports and entertainment.
