Bialosky: The Destruction of an American Icon

Frank and Jamie McCourt, a couple of scalawags, came to the “Big City” thinking they were going to ride on the backs of the Dodgers to their personal stardom amongst the glitterati. We’ve seen others do this before, only to end up going home with their tails between their legs. The McCourt’s started hobnobbing with the stars and using the Dodgers to edge their way into the inner sanctums of Hollywood and local politics. They did not buy one very expensive home here – they bought four very expensive homes here (totaling approximately $70 million). This was despite the fact that Frank McCourt, commonly referred to as the “Parking Lot Attendant” (PLA), had to borrow money from Fox to buy the Dodgers and was rumored to be very short on cash.
...
This messy divorce has brought out some ominous facts about the condition of the Dodgers. Yes, they made it to the 2009 National League Championship Series, but that has to do with players put in place years ago. From all accounts, money for player development has dried up, and their minor league system (that had for decades been a jewel) has now become a disaster. In addition, the amount of money spent for quality free agents is rapidly dwindling. A team that is in the second biggest market in the United States and draws either the largest or second-largest number of fans every season will be spending less than the Minnesota Twins for their major league roster this year. So where is all this money going?
...
For the good of the game, Bud Selig needs to step in and order the sale of the team immediately. He has the right to do this in the best interest of baseball. There are plenty of local folk who would be delighted to own the franchise and return it to its proper place among the elite operations in professional sports. Then we can send these carpetbaggers back to the hole from which they came.

I love how, suddenly, once the Twins have finally begun to pony up a fraction of their billionaire owners' money, it becomes a crisis to those who traditionally spent more than them.

Townhall.com? I had to go wash my hands and brush my teeth after visiting that site.

The current situation is bad both in a tangible and intangible way but the majority of McCourt's ownership (admittedly short) has to be viewed positively by Dodger fans I would think. 4 post-season berths in six years, two NLCS appearances and for all the concern about this off-season they still look like one of the top teams in the National League. I think this Bialosky guy needs to move to Kansas City or Baltimore to get an appreciation for crummy ownership.

They might be delighted to own it and return it to the elite. They almost certainly won't be delighted to pay to own the team, and those with enough business sense to amass that much cash probably also have enough business sense not to invest in the team for emotional gain. There's a pretty fair chance that the next owner of the Dodgers will make things worse (on the field), not better.

That is kind of a quaint website, isn't it? Five seconds after I got to it, a pop-up ad for a Sean Hannity book started following me like some crazed Tea Party wingnut.

That said, he's right about the Dodgers. Selig should order the sale of the team and have it moved back to Brooklyn.

No, only T.J. Simers refers to McCourt as that.

Not so sure about that. Witness the various billionaires currently trying to buy the Golden State Warriors.

Why should the Twin's payroll have anything to do with their owner's independent wealth? Or, more precisely, why should we expect an owner to operate his team at a deficit? I understand that fans don't want to see their owners pocketing massive profits while the team stinks, but this is a business, and spending should be dictated by reasonably expected revenues rather than the depth of the owner's Swiss bank accounts.

I think people expect a billionaire owner not to be pocketing revenue sharing money and offering to contract his team for a price (as Carl Pohlad did).

I wouldn't expect him to lose money, but does a billionaire really need to siphon that extra $30-40M off the Twins, or could he maybe reinvest it in the team, make the fans happy, and build the value of his asset?

Which is why I found the following quote from the excerpt most interesting:

For the good of the game, Bud Selig needs to step in and order the sale of the team immediately.

Gee, sell someone's team out from under them without their consent? Sacrifice the individual's ownership rights for the good of the community as a whole? Sounds like a pretty socialistic recommendation for a website that, shall we say, leans more than a bit to the right. Well, I guess property rights are sacred except when it's someone else's property that's under discussion.
