Big League Stew: Jeff Francoeur sends 20 pizzas to A’s fans in bleachers

Well, last night was the second annual Bacon Tuesday, so the food got really elaborate and somebody made T-shirts with Francoeur’s name on them, claiming him to be the event’s “sponsor.” At some point, Francoeur stopped by again and fans him gave treats — perhaps some chocolate bacon, bacon cheesecake or bacon jalapeño poppers — along with a shirt. He was happier than a pig in slop as he showed off the shirt to teammates.

On Wednesday, Francoeur paid back the fans again. It was pizza delivery time, along with a bat, again signed by Francoeur:

“RF Bleachers, keep cooking Bacon, Jeff Francoeur”

Happy Birthday Pizza Hut! 54 years. Wow, you guys are getting up there! I just wanted to wish you a very happy 54th birthday and thank you for not only everything that you’ve done for me and my family, but also for what you guys continue to do for all of your customers.

It's easy enough to make fun of Francoeur, but stories like this are why it's tough to actually dislike him.

That is awesome! Also all three photos in the article are pretty good.

Good for Frenchy, I agree with #1, the really should be more stories like this in baseball.

Big deal, he always does great stuff in April, by July he's barely going to be ordering five pizzas a week.

This is awesome. The video link in the article is broken but you can find them by searching for Francoeur on mlb.com video (e.g. http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=20520081&c_id=mlb)

Frenchy should have the good grace to be a jerk.

No Delta vouchers? Cheapskate.

One of my favorite ball park experiences was hanging over the pepsi porch in a meaningless mets game circa June 2010 (2009?) and hammering Frenchy about every meme I could: OBP on the scoreboard, delta, etc. He looked up at one point and just smiled. I can't hate the guy, he seems like a decent enough person from everything I know. Just the sort of ballplayer that engenders resentment because old media hacks love him more than they should.

He could afford to smile. He also can afford to buy those pizzas. Not that he was obligated...it was a nice thing to do.

The pizza and bat is pretty cool, but the part I liked the most was that last year he threw a signed baseball into the stands with a hundred dollar bill rubber banded to it.

I'm still annoyed he turned pro rather than attend Clemson, but other than that, he seems pretty swell.

MLB.com posted a link on Twitter with video of the fans' reaction.

Twenty pizzas was more than enough to feed all the fans in the stadium, and even have some left over to take home.

I wonder if he's a guy that really could have used some college seasoning. He experienced stardom pretty early, then crashed to earth. You wonder if success had come more gradually he wouldn't have had such dramatic spikes.

While certainly no slouch on the baseball field, Francoeur was more lusted after by Clemson for his football prowess. Some college seasoning would probably have helped him, but it's hard to calculate the impact playing two collegiate sports would have had on his development in baseball.

He wears platform spikes? No damned wonder his game tends to fall off.

4 was pretty solid.

And agree with all, this is a classy move.

Science really needs to work on some next level personality swap technology... Why can't Jeff Kent's personality be grafted onto Frenchy's skillset?
   17. What did Billy Ripken have against Elroy Face? Posted: April 12, 2012 at 02:52 PM (#4105085)
Great story, until two dozen fans began to fight over the single bat, resulting in the alpha fan using it to beat the others to death.

I wonder if there's a connection to the mysterious obelisks in the Yankee outfield?

I can't believe y'all are missing the bigger point of this article. Bacon cheesecake! Never before have my brain and stomach disagreed over something so vehemently.

Yeah, but if it was Pizza Hut pizza he should lose a few points for that. Unless people in Oakland like that slop.

They just looked like the typical ballpark personal pizzas.

They were round table pizzas, which are pretty good but not amazing.

Burger King is doing a Bacon Sundae. Pass. Literally.
