Billy Hamilton, Reds’ minor-league star, robbed, according to police

Billy Hamilton, a California League all-star playing in Tuesday night’s California-Carolina League All-Star Game at BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem, was the victim of an armed robbery early Tuesday, according to police.

...Police said two men, one of which was armed with a handgun, approached the victims in separate incidents just minutes apart.

Billy Hamilton was with another man when he was robbed, police said.

A third man who was in town to umpire Tuesday’s game was also robbed, police said.

No one was injured. Police believe the suspects left in a light blue Pontiac Grand Am with no rims.

Thanks to Jimbo.

Wouldn't that make it difficult to drive?

I'm assuming the author is using "rims" in place of hubcaps.

Also, the last graf of the article:
Hamilton, who plays for the Bakersfield Blaze, the Reds' High-A affiliate, won California League MVP honors in the game Tuesday night. In the first inning, Hamilton singled, stole second, stole third and scored the California All-Stars only run of the game in a 9-1 loss.

So far this season, Hamilton has played 66 games and stolen 80 bases (at a >80% success rate). I cannot wait for this guy to play in the majors.

In their box score) That's ridiculous.

This was against Lake Elsinore, who have really stupid hats.

Years later, I always confuse Lake Elsinore with Lake Hemet.

And a terrible logo too. There's just no excuse for Lake Elsinore to use anything other than this logo.

I have walked by the intersection where these robberies occurred (North Trade and West Fifth) at night several times before. I never felt unsafe. The intersection is within a block or two of a couple bar-filled areas, but I don't think has many bars at it itself and thus would probably pretty dark and desolate at night, save for a few tipsy folks walking from one group of bars to another. Probably a good place to rob some folks, though there are usually a fair amount of cops parked outside of this one club just a couple blocks away.

Not going to lie to feel popular.... these have been my favorite minor league hats for years now.

I like the eyeball hats just for doing something different, even if the eyes themselves look like those of Daffy Duck. Probably not my favorite though (Kannapolis Intimidators, Visalia Oaks ... wait, the Visalia Oaks changed to something stupid and generic! What a shame).

You can also get Lake Elsinore Storm memorabilia with this generic piece-of-crap logo on it.

Rico Noel has two for Lake Elsinore, giving him 46, against 8 CS. It doesn't look like he can hit, but he can run. I think that would lead the league at the 1/2 way point in most non-Hamilton years (3rd this year is Travis Witherspoon with 25). Noel was 62/5 last year across A/A+.

If the go-ahead run had been on 5th base, the henchmen would have botched the robbery....

If they're going to overpay for it, they should do it soon -- the joke is already in a decline phase.

Yeah, those hats are awesome. I'd buy one if I needed a new hat.

Anyone want to guess what Rico Noel's legal first name is?

Jablonski. Yep. I'm not joking. Jablonski Noel. Jablonski Rico Noel.

But yeah, Noel is a baller in his own right, just getting a little overshadowed by Billy Hamilton's ridiculousness right now. Noel was a stud at Coastal, he developed a ton between his freshman and junior years.

What an awful game that must have been to attend. 28 pitchers!

You're not kidding. The West Division made a mid-inning pitching change during each of the last *six* innings. That's an abomination against all that is holy.

I'm surprised nobody's made a Billy Hamilton stealing joke yet...
   31. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 21, 2012 at 08:54 AM (#4162590)
RMc raises the truly important question here.

Should the new Billy Hamilton be nicknamed "Sliding Billy" Hamilton? Clearly his nickname should be "[Participle] Billy", but should it be "Sliding" or another related verbal adjective?
   32. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 21, 2012 at 09:45 AM (#4162630)
Definitely NOT "Sliding." Besides retiring numbers as far as I'm concerned we should be retiring nicknames for Hall of Famers. That excludes generic nicknames like "Sweet Lou" or the horrible first initial-first three letters of the last name abominations (A-Rod). It's always bothered me that "Pudge" was stolen by another catcher.

Stupid rant over, I stand with a "NO" vote on "Sliding Billy Hamilton." Off the top of my head "Running Billy Hamilton" is the way to go.
   33. Hysterical & Useless Posted: June 21, 2012 at 01:55 PM (#4162850)
Opposing catchers already call him Effing Billy Hamilton.

Those three-letter abominations should be retired, but yeah. The nickname has to be a nod to "Sliding," but it can't be a direct copy. Names such as Stealing, Swiping, Running, Diving (if that's how he arrives at the bag) are what we're looking for.
   37. Der_K Posted: June 21, 2012 at 06:23 PM (#4163021)
I'm calling him Sliding until he does some particularly good deed - at which point he becomes 'Standup'.
Using the same name functions as homage and could draw attention to a cool period in baseball history.
