Blue Jays Acquire Mayberry Jr.

Grady Sizemore, Dom Brown, Darin Ruf, they’ve talked about moving Cody Asche out there… the Phillies just couldn’t keep all these great left fielders around.

The Blue Jays have acquired outfielder John Mayberry Jr. from the Phillies. Philadelphia announced the move via Twitter. The Phillies received infielder Gustavo Pierre in return.

The missing piece!

Heh. Mayberry is a decent piece of the puzzle - can hit LHP and play the OF and 1B at a reasonable level. Better than Reimold with that ability to cover the OF/1B, controllable for a few years, and the cost was nothing really (a guy who is now at 3B and has never had an OPS over 716). You always need these marginal improvements to the bench, especially with so many fragile players on the team.

Now, lets get a big deal done and fill that 2B hole already.

Will the Blue Jays next seek to acquire Rance Mullinks, Jr and Garth Iorg, Jr.?

I saw Mayberry play for Stanford a few times back in the day, at the Sunken Diamond. (Beautiful little park, by the way. If you don't mind the ping of a metal bat, it's a great place to catch a game if you're in the Peninsula on a spring day.)

Anyhoozy, my experience watching Mayberry is a real testament to how little an amateur can tell by watching a prospect play. Mayberry had a big, broad back, and an elegant swing that seemed to produce a hard line drive every time he came up to bat. I was convinced that he was going to be a big, big star, and I think I may even have compared him favorably to Willie McCovey (oof, on so many levels) on my short-lived baseball blog.

Apparently, I also saw Jed Lowrie play on those teams, though I have no memory of him. Lowrie has turned out to be the superior player, at least when he's able to get on the field. Another lesson, I suppose.

Then again, I was probably stoned every single time I watched them play, so who knows.

Now that KC appears to have claimed at least a WC spot (far from certain I know), the Jays will have the longest active playoff drought in MLB.

For those of you who follow the Jays actively, what was the rationale behind AA's inaction at the deadline? Is the cupboard just to bare for them to move prospects?

Pretty much. They emptied out the cupboard in the Dickey and Buehrle/Johnson/Reyes trades and don't have a lot of interesting prospects left. Of course, that's also a reason to go for it now. A lot of Blue Jays fans were upset that the team didn't make a move, and both Bautista and Janssen spoke out publicly about their disappointment. I don't know that any move would have prevented this massive slide. There's not much a front office can do when everyone stops hitting at once (see trade deadline winners Oakland and Detroit). Then again, perhaps the team would have played better if they thought management had some faith in them.

#5 I guess the next move will be to sell Prince Fielder to a Japanese team.

They're 1/2 game up in the Central and just 2 up on Seattle for the second WC. I'd say you can't even see certain from where they are.

I'm pretty sure every deal they discussed had the opposing GM starting with "If you give us Stroman/Sanchez/Norris...", which is a deal breaker for AA/Jays.
Other than those three pitchers, they have nothing of real value in the minors.
I guess they could have flipped Gose for a spare part, but they did that to get Valencia (which I thought was a good move).

And if you are dealing one of those three young pitchers, you damn well better be getting back someone like Price/Lester.

With the money saved here, the Phillies can finally give Ryan Howard that extension.

Good grief Ruben, I know Mayberry is probably at negative value with his service time, but a guy with 17 BB in his last 880 or PA?

Or Ruben Amaro Jr. himself...
