Blue Jays players were willing to alter contracts to land Santana

It was as if the Toronto Blue Jays passed around a hat, trying to collect enough money to sign free-agent right-hander Ervin Santana.

Several Jays players discussed deferring portions of their salaries to clear payroll for Santana last month, according to major league sources.

The discussions, which apparently did not progress past the conversation stage, raise new questions about the Jays’ payroll flexibility for 2014.

Beeston's comments on this were interesting. From mlb trade rumors: "Well, there was discussion about that, Matt. And to be very honest with you, I think if it would've gone that way, that would've been fine. But we are at $140MM right now. One thing that we do have is a very generous owner from the point of view of what they have committed to try to build the team... Beeston was somewhat vague when asked by Galloway if ownership had capped spending at that $140MM mark, replying, "Well, we're a business. So the answer to that is we have a budget. So the answer is it's not a cap, because I think if we can increase our revenue, we can increase our expenses. But we run it as a business."

So they had the money to sign Santana but after agreeing to terms with Toronto he jumped to Atlanta. But at the same time, it 'would've been fine' for the team to defer money to other players to get Santana. But they could get more money anyways, if they can tie it to more revenue. Right...

In the end I can't expend much energy to care about this, because it's Ervin Santana and not someone essential. The lack of spending on any sort of depth was far more alarming to me.

Also, this story getting leaked has to be awkward for Drew Hutchison and Dustin McGowan.
