Blue Jays sign Kawasaki

The TORONTO BLUE JAYS have agreed to terms with INF MUNENORI KAWASAKI on a 2014 minor league contract with an invitation to attend Major League spring training.

Kawasaki, 32, appeared in 96 games for the Blue Jays last season batting .229 with a .326 OBP, one home run and 24 RBI. His five triples tied for the club high in 2013

It’s a Christmas miracle!

One of my favorite active players...

Easily my favourite bad player in the majors right now.
Everyone in the dugout seemed to love his energy.

I remembered him being above average (per bWAR), and sure enough he was. Heck, Frangraphs has him as being worth 4 million dollars last year. That .229/.326/.308 line is pretty ugly, and his lack of positional flexibility hurts, but there are worse guys you could stash in AAA to be an emergency callup.

And he also is fun to watch. He deserves his reputation as a scrappy hustle player.

iirc, the free mlb.tv game of the day was the day he hit his one home run, and yes, the positive team energy that it seemed to produce was noticeable.

As far as backups go, he's fine. Guy can play a solid SS or 2B, can steal some bases, and isn't a total embarrassment at the plate (by the standard of utility infielders). I would have no problem if he made the team again, provided he's not starting anywhere.

Agreed with RJ - put him as a backup for SS/2B/3B and used only a couple times a week at most unless Reyes is on the DL. Stash at AAA if reasonable options exist for the majors (Goins is a solid SS/2B backup with no bat but great glove and might start at 2B but if a new guy comes in then Goins as the backup IF and Kawasaki in AAA makes a lot of sense).

I don't mind Kawasaki as a spare part, but I hope the Jays don't start attaching talismanic importance to him the way they did with John McDonald. I hate that.
