Blue Jays trade Brett Wallace for centre-field prospect

Seems awfully fast to dump what seems like a sure fire bat at 1b.

toolsy

you said it

AND they traded him for someone who sounds, AT BEST, like michael bourn

makes me wonder WHY

My guess is that two years from now, Billy Beane will trade five prospects and AAAA player Michael Taylor for Brett Wallace.

Bourn is pretty good

does Beane have a history of trading for guys he's already given up on?

#4 -- good question. I don't know. All I know is that Beane supposedly really wanted Wallace. He traded Matt Holliday for him. Said Wallace was a great fit for the A's. And then Bily traded Wallace (.868 OPS in Las Vegas) away less than a year later--for Michael Taylor, who is 9 months older and looking rather weak in AAA (.744 OPS in the PCL). Maybe Billy still really wants Wallace?

He does have a history of cutting bait very quickly. He got rid of Carlos Pena after about 10 seconds.

i think that bourn is very good

but you are talking a superb fielder who is a good base stealer and singles hitter who doesn't walk near enough

bourn is NOT rickey henderson, which is who apparently the jays think that gose is

I've heard AA talk about Gose, and he's certainly not thinking that he's going to be Rickey. Rather, as the article mentions, the Jays are thinking of him more as a defensive star with speed. There hasn't been the slightest indication that they think he's going to develop Rickey's power and eye (although the guys on the local radio shows have been talking about him as potentially becoming Carl Crawford in CF, which seems a little optimistic).

ryan

interesting

because someone said that the jays thought of gose as rickey

but there are all KINDS of defensive stars with speed who can't hit - he could go get willy taveras right NOW

why trade THAT for a supposedly top AAA prospect who is supposed to be this great slugging 1B?

So, how about Jose Bautista? Seriously.

Wallace is 24 in a month and hitting .301/.359/.509 in the PCL and he's K'ing at a fairly high rate. I don't think he's that much of a prospect anymore.

cowboy

if YOU figured that out, why can't ed effing wade????!!!!!

It's possible that someone did, but AA wasn't talking in those terms during the interview I heard. Really, it was mostly talking about his tools, and his defense, so the thought which kept coming to my mind was more of a Devon White type. Of course, we are talking about a toolsy 19 year old, so there's a huge range of what he could turn into. Maybe someone like Devon White, maybe someone like Wily Tavares, or maybe someone who never even gets to sniff the majors.

Either way, it seems like Wallace has basically stalled out - as CP notes, his line in the PCL isn't too impressive for a 1B, especially considering his home park is Las Vegas - so I'm not too bothered by the Jays trading him away.

It's getting ridiculous. He's hitting about 0.600 for the last week, with serious power.

I don't know much about Gose, but we all know about Wallace.

Let me put it this way: I'd trust the German octopus over Ed Wade when it came to evaluating talent.

Oy. Vey. Iz. Meer.

Where the hell is centre-field?
