Blue Jays want ‘strong foundation’ for Bichette before promotion - Sportsnet.ca

“We’d really like to see some time in triple-A and have him get his legs under him and have a good strong foundation before we have that discussion,” Atkins said. “But his spring training was extremely impressive and what he’s done in the minor leagues thus far, the teammate that he is, the effort that he has, it’s really a lot to get excited about.”

Because he missed six weeks with a fractured bone in his left hand, Bichette has played just 21 games at triple-A. Through 89 plate appearances, he’s batting a respectable .250/.307/.450 with three home runs.

To gain any service time advantage at this point, they'd have to keep him down all the way through early next season. Which they might but, if he performs, maybe they'll bring him up after the trading deadline. In this particular case, having already played their game with Vlad but (I'm guessing) having brought up Biggio before the super-2, I might cut them a little more slack over service time in terms of not wanting to have all three guys scheduled for FA in the same year.

Biggio is putting up a solid but strange line so far of 203/349/449 with 7 XBH in his 14 hits, K-rate just under 30% (and a walk rate near 20%). Playing him around -- 13 starts at 2B, 5 in the OF, 2 at 1B, 1 at DH.

EDIT: oops, Vlad was also injured in the spring so fate played their service time game for them.

The headline made me think this was a public relations promotion, like a bobblehead. It's true, I don't follow the Blue Jays system.

A strong foundation is pretty important for a bobblehead. Don't want it falling over!

With AAA switching to the MLB ball and it's attendant consequences, I wonder if it has become a more meaningful stepping stone this season than previously. Like, there's actually some value in taking a month or two in AAA to adjust to the new ball than before, where it was largely a pantry for replacement level roster filler, service time manipulation, and blocked prospects.

Or maybe I'm underselling the previous importance of AAA, but it often felt like prospects dominating AA could generally skip AAA without really hurting their chances.
