Bobby V decries lack of talent on roster

Bobby Valentine, historian.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to suffering Boston Red Sox fans that Bobby Valentine sees plenty of room for improvement when he looks at his roster right now.

Still, it might be a surprise just how bad the manager sees it.

Valentine didn’t mince words Friday when asked whether there was a particular area of his last-place team he’d most like to improve.

“Are you kidding? This is the weakest roster we’ve ever had in September in the history of baseball,” he said. “It could use help everywhere.”

Valentine said beaten-down Boston might add “one or two guys” from Triple-A Pawtucket in the coming days.

Oh, dear.

See this is that outside the box thinking that made Bobby V such an attractive candidate. Who isn't motivated by, "Wow, you guys suck?"

I'm going to go watch "Four Days in October" until I pass out.

It's a poor workman that blames his tools, Bobby.

Oscar Vitt feels your pain, Bobby.

Smoking the objective pipe, attempting humor, or trying to get fired ASAP?

Yes.

Running this through the babelfish baseball to english translator:

"Please fire me now so that I can line up a TV gig for the series of exhibition games which follow the regular season."

The guy from Pawtucket? You guessed it- Arnie Beyeler.

Bobby isn't entirely wrong. This is a horrible team right now even if I doubt it is truly the worst ever. But wow what a kick in the nuts to the guys showing up at the ballpark everyday. I can't imagine playing/working for such a loathsome person.

The only reason I don't want him fired at this point is that I think the Sox are going to be lousy again next year and I think Bobby is really miserable. The idea of him enjoying a paid year off pisses me off and I want him to spend another year absolutely miserable or driven to quit.

I'm guessing Valentine is fired within sixty seconds of the last pitch of the Red Sox season.

It's not even close to being the worst roster right now. OTOH, I'm certain the current Astros manager, whoever he is, is doing a much better job than the Sox skipper, so that evens things up a bit.

Added Valentine, "We really could use all these guys we traded away because I couldn't get along with them right about now."

I don't know, last night the Astros actually gave up a home run to Domonic Brown. Several things had to go wrong for something like that to happen.

The thing about the Astros is that they had the same, "These guys are terrible! Trade all these terrible guys!" moment, and then they really did. Jed Lowrie was DHing for the Single A Astros team in the playoffs, and we were trying to think of who else they could DL to be ringers for their minor league squads and the only guy I could even think of who would be useful was Wilton Lopez.

But it's at least plausible that he was responsible for Youkilis being traded for nothing, so part of the roster makeup is likely his fault.

The correct answer is 30 seconds, but you're in the ballpark.

This reminds me of the scene in Men in Black where Tommy Lee Jones is yelling at the giant bug to eat him.

I picture Valentine standing in front of Henry yelling, "Fire me! FIRE me!" and waving his around wildly.

That sentence is exactly what Valentine is complaining about: no arms.

Homage to WKRP:

"This is Deep Throat again. Did you know that when Bobby Valentine is in the clubhouse, he likes to lounge around - in a dress?"

Ummm...maybe I am prone to snap judgements - but if an employee of mine made a statement like this about the employees he was in charge of....he wouldn't have a job by the end of the interview.

Yes, it's getting to the point where Bobby is simply trying to get them mad enough to give him the heave-ho and let him collect his $$ while working on his sun tan in Hawaii.

The only reason I don't want him fired at this point is that I think the Sox are going to be lousy again next year and I think Bobby is really miserable. The idea of him enjoying a paid year off pisses me off and I want him to spend another year absolutely miserable or driven to quit.

It probably pisses the Red Sox off, too, but I don't think that Larry's sadism is so indiscriminate that he'd keep Bobby around just for that reason, as it would not help the team and would be about as disastrous a PR move you could make WRT the fan base.

Unless, of course, they really ARE going to sell the team...

Then they really don't want to piss off the fans, and tank attendance.

I'm pretty sure I was against his hiring, back when his name was first mentioned. (Curtseys demurely.)

I, also, was opposed to his hiring. (Bows gallantly.)

I know there's no real way to know this, but I simply can't imagine there is any way in hell anyone else would have done any better with that team this year.

Granting that there's no real way to know this, I would say very much the opposite. Based on the evidence we do have, I don't think there is a single facet of managing that Bobby V has done well this year. Terrible lineup decisions, disappointing in-game strategy, seeming ineptitude with managing the clubhouse, the media ... how bad a job does someone have to do before we conclude that much better was possible?
   32. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: September 15, 2012 at 05:15 PM (#4236698)
I'm with Jittery. The Sox weren't going to win 90 games if they had just hired Gene Lamont or Torey Lovullo but I think it's pretty likely that Valentine has been about as big a negative as a manager can be in the win column.

More like a tool who blames his workmen, amirite?
