Bodley: Zduriencik builds winner in Seattle

And all without sabermetrics! Way to go, Bods!

Jack Zduriencik reminds me of a movie star discovered in a Hollywood drug store who goes on to win an Academy Award.

Those who celebrate these kinds of successes are unaware of all the years of hard work, waiting on tables, daily struggles, toiling in the Minor Leagues, etc., for that defining moment at the drug store.

Baseball people are gawking at Zduriencik’s success since becoming Seattle’s general manager and even calling him an overnight success.

Don’t mention that to the 59-year-old Zduriencik (zur-EN-sik). The Z-man, as he’s called in Seattle, has more than paid his dues. For years he’s been anything but baseball’s best-kept secret.

“I got my chance, but I’m not doing anything differently than I’ve ever done,” he says. “I just try to be who I am. I want to be good; there are 30 clubs out there who want to be good.”

Has he already built a winner?

[2] 30 clubs _do_ want to be good, but for some clubs, you just can't tell from their actions.

Preserved: I'd prefer the stories be more along the lines of "He Ain't Bavasi" than "Twenty Eight Rings Sure to Follow Now!" The dude signed Eric Byrnes...I mean he's human and all. The hype is getting to be a bit much and that can only mean one thing, unless the Ms start winning from Day One.

If you are like me, and view baseball as a game played primarily on paper, then yes. That's why I think Mark Shapiro and the other members of the Indians front office are geniuses. Their teams may not actually win or even play well, but they SEEM like they should win, and that's enough for me. All the rest is just (bad) luck.

I think it is perfectly fair to say Jack Zduriencik has built a winner--in Milwaukee.

In his one season at the helm in Seattle, his club had a P-record of 75-87. The three years prior the Mariners had P-records of 67-95 ('08), 79-83 ('07) and 78-84 ('06). In other words, of Seattle's last four years, the team Zduriencik put on the field was more-less the same as the ballclubs Billy Bavasi brandished.

That said, Zduriencik made a couple of nice off-season moves and Seattle should finish above .500 (IMO) in 2010. I like them to wind-up in third, behind Texas (2nd) and the No-Hope A's (1st).
