Boone retires, joins ESPN

Aaron Boone, who unleashed one of the most famous home runs in New York Yankees history, today announced his retirement as a player to join ESPN as a baseball analyst.

Boone will mainly be seen on “Baseball Tonight” (debuting in March). He will have appearances as a game analyst, a role he served for ESPN Radio during the 2009 National League Division Series.

Most important knee injury in baseball history? I say yes.

Anyway, happy trails, Mr. Boone, and continued health.

Dusty Rhodes--> Francisco Cabrera--> Aaron F'ing Boone

A True Yankee.

#2 should have started with Bobby Thompson, of course, before Rhodes

Some of us are still bitter about Tito ####### Landrum.

would Rivera have come out for a 4th inning if Wake got through this one?

Probably not; they had Contreras warming up in the pen.

I'm searching for any sign of anger on my part upon mention of Boone's name and am finding none. 2004 healed all.

I can still summon a "WHY NOT MATCH UP WILLIAMSON - WHO HAD GIVEN UP 3 HITS AND STRUCK OUT 14 IN 8 POSTSEASON INNINGS - WITH RIVERA AND THEN THINK OF WAKEFIELD YOU MORON, THERE'S NO LAW AGAINST PITCHING YOUR CLOSER IN A TIE GAME ON THE ROAD!" if I try.

Boone had open heart surgery and missed most of last season. Does he really know what's going on?
I just saw Bobby Valentine on ESPN the other night talking about the Yankees prospects and how they compare to last year. How would he know? He was in Japan.

the same way everyone else who doesn't attend minor league games does.

Hmm, an interesting question. Creating lists of most important injuries. For example, does Bo Jackson win the "hip injury" category?

he wins the "what if" prize for who would have been the #1 floggie of the SABRs

more so than Garvey or Joe Carter, I think

Bill Walton is the runaway winner for foot injuries.

Andy Pettitte was in the bullpen seeing if he could get loose after starting the previous game. Which shows you how little Joe Torre trusted Jeff Weaver. His brother Brett was doing a very poor job broadcasting the game because FOX couldn't arrange for a private airplane for Curt Schilling to do the job.

Didn't Bobby Thomson break an ankle which gave Hank Aaron a chance to start? Although he would almost certainly have gotten a chance eventually. DiMaggio wrecked his knee that fell asleep getting out of a taxi (he claimed) as a minor leaguer which scared a lot of teams from trying to get him from the SF Seals. Yankees took a chance and made a deal.

Different kind of injury but Whitey Herzog used to say Steve Howe's cocaine problems screwed the Dodgers several times. Need a reliever because he's suspended: trade Fat Sid Fernandez for Carlos Diaz. Howe is back? Trade John Wetteland. Not the only bad deals they made because of Howe.

The important thing is that ESPN has acquired a glittering piece of the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry, which is more commonly known as "sports." They're currently in negotiations with Brad Halsey, who only had 14 wins but started that wild 2004 game with the two Manny HRs and Nomar scowling on the bench.

Speaking of which, if anybody knows the name of the fan who was sitting in the seat that Jeter smashed his face into, there's still a part-time ESPN analyst's slot open.

3 way tie, Rohm n Haas

Which makes Game 4 of the World Series that year even more perplexing.

Chipper Jones was going to be the Braves left fielder in '94 until he tore his ACL late in spring training. Who knows how his career, Ryan Klesko's career, or the Braves' future would have turned out if that hadn't happened?

Seriously? The home run off Wakefield to end Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS.*

I remember the to-do when the third-generation major leaguers were coming onto the scene -- the Bells, the Boones and, almost, the Campanises (the third one never quite made it). Now they're all gone, aren't they?
   30. Crispix Attacks Posted: February 24, 2010 at 02:52 AM (#3466611)
Not the Hairstons!
   31. esseff Posted: February 24, 2010 at 02:59 AM (#3466616)
That's right. We still have Hairstons. I suppose in a way Jayson Werth is a third-generation player, except that the middle generation is either an uncle or stepfather.

Nah, Len Koenecke's got all those guys beat.
   33. Infinite Yost (Voxter) Posted: February 24, 2010 at 04:07 AM (#3466661)
What happened to Werth that he didn't play in 2006?

Also -- talk about career turnarounds. The guy went from failed prospect to star in an awfully big hurry.
