Boras fires back

Scott Boras phoned from California to give this quote: “The Pirates violated Major League Baseball rules and have issued a nearly 600-word statement, made their actions look to be my fault. I think it’s time for the Pirates and Mr. Coonelly to come clean with the fans of Pittsburgh and let everyone know about their dealings with Mr. Alvarez.”

Yinzers rise up to defend Boras? Blaaahhaahhahhaaaaa!!!

Why did they add the 8/15 deadline? What was wrong with the previous deadline? And why 8/15 rather than 9/23 or something?

They did it to eliminate draft-and-follows.

My working theory is that Alvarez has a clause in his contract with Boras that says that unless he get the highest signing-on fee for a hitter in the draft he has the right to put Boras privates in a vise.

It also gives those players who sign at the end of the window more time within their new organizations and it helps teams in negotiations (IMO) by helping to prevent players from obtaining data on bonuses to others by clumping the signings together.

And it severely limits Scott Boras' ability to pressure teams into caving to his demands by waiting, waiting, waiting. And I have little doubt that was just as important to the owners as the other, more commonly mentioned reasons for it when they put it in the last CBA.

It also gives all players the same deadline.

When it was attend class that was very flexible and gave people like Boras a lot of lee way to continue holding out.

Now Boras might have 5-15 clients not signed with time running out simultaneously.

So, in other words, you think it's about money for the owners. Which is fine; they're entitled to negotiate in their own interests. But why, then, does Boras receive the opprobrium he does when he acts as if it's about money?

In this case, one reason would be that Boras is willing to dick over the son of a jitney cab driver in order to fight a battle that's an otherwise irrelevant fact in his client's life.
